and/or between mating surfaces of rear dual
wheels for corrosion protection in severe
environments.
Warning
If equipped, poorly maintained wheel
guards can cause the wheel nuts to
become loose over time. The wheel could
come off and cause a crash. To prevent
property damage, personal injury, and/or
death, properly clean and maintain the
wheel guards:
Clean the wheel guards during service
procedures involving wheel removal.
Replace any wheel guard that is worn,
distorted (wavy), or damaged during
service procedures involving wheel
removal.
Install new wheel guards when it is
time for new tires.
Reinstall wheel guards in the same
position as installed before wheel
removal.
Tightening procedure for wheels with
two-piece flanged wheel lug nuts
(hub-piloted):
1. Clean the mating surfaces of the hub,
drum, and wheel(s) as well as the wheel
studs and wheel lug nuts with a wire
brush prior to assembly.
Warning
Lubricating the two-piece wheel nuts
and/or wheel stud threads with
anti-seize compound can cause low
friction and impact wheel retention.
To prevent property damage,
personal injury, and/or death, do not
use an anti-seize compound.
2. Lubricate the two-piece flanged wheel
lug nuts by putting two drops of 30
weight oil in the slot between the nut
body and flange washer and spin the
washer to spread the oil around the
nut-to-washer contact surface.
3. Carefully lubricate the wheel stud
threads by applying two drops of 30
weight oil to the last two or three
threads at the end of each stud. Do not
get the oil on any other surfaces;
otherwise, the wheel clamping
effectiveness will be reduced.
4. To prevent aluminum wheels from
getting stuck on the hub due to
corrosion, apply a thin coat of grease to
the hub pilot pads only.
5. Slide the inner and outer wheels (if
duals) or the steer wheel over the wheel
studs and onto the pilot pads of the hub.
Care must be taken to avoid damage to
the stud threads while positioning the
wheel. Ensure that the wheel is resting
on the pilot pads and is against the
brake drum.
6. Hand-start all wheel nuts to prevent
cross-threading.
