Manual & Best Practices guidelines for
drilling holes in frames and heat-treated
steel. Before mounting a snow plow or any
front end equipment, subtract the front axle
curb weight (as equipped) from the vehicle
Front Axle GAWR, this value is Max Front
End Available Payload. This is the maximum
value a snow plow or front end mounted
equipment should weigh when installed on
the vehicle.
Caution
Do not exceed the Gross Vehicle Weight
Rating (GVWR) or the maximum front or
rear Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)
when installing a snow plow or other
front-end equipment. If the vehicle is
overloaded, it can change how the vehicle
handles and cause systems to
malfunction. This can cause loss of
control and a crash. Overloading your
vehicle may also result in a reduction of
brake performance, damage to the tires,
and reduced vehicle life.
Electrical: RPO VYU provides electrical
capacity and safety related harnesses for
snow plow and front end mounted
equipment upfits. For Non RPO VYU vehicles,
consult with snow plow or front end
mounted equipment manufacturer for any
of the electrical requirements and OEM
interface. Do not exceed the electrical
capacity of vehicle as built.
Snow plow and front end mounted
equipment capacity variables:
OEM options as equipped, and weight of
those options
Weight and number of passengers
Weight of items added to the vehicle,
such as tools, loose upfit equipment, and
cargo
Total weight of above items combined
with snow plow and front end mounted
equipment
To safely support snow plow or front end
mounted equipment on the vehicle:
Follow all aftermarket snow plow or front
end mounted equipment manufacturer s
instructions for the installation/operation.
When driving with a snow plow or front
end mounted equipment, the engine
coolant temperature gauge values may
increase. The snow plow or front end
mounted equipment may block airflow to
the radiator. At speeds above 88 km
(55 mph), this condition may cause the
engine coolant to overheat. Do not allow
powertrain operating temperatures to
exceed safe limits.
When driving, to increase powertrain
airflow move the plow blade to an
optimal safe position.
Snow plow or front end mounted
equipment, passenger weight etc. may
require appropriate counter ballast
installed over the rear axle.
Rear ballast may be required for proper
front and rear weight distribution ratio,
even though the actual weight at the
front axle may be less than GAWR.
Counter ballast must be properly secured
during vehicle operation.
Consult snow plow and front end
mounted equipment manufacturer/
installer to assist in determining the
amount of rear ballast if required. Take
precaution to ensure that the upfit
equipment/vehicle combination does not
exceed front and rear GAWR and weight
distribution ratio.
The total upfit vehicle must not exceed
the GVWR. Following any upfit to a
vehicle, verify the proper front end Z
height and alignment.
