In￿the￿F23￿the￿rollover￿protection￿system￿is￿installed￿as￿standard￿behind￿the￿rear￿head￿restraints￿and￿is
used￿for￿passive￿safety￿purposes.￿It￿is￿fully￿recessed,￿to￿ensure￿a￿clean￿design￿compared￿to￿the￿E88.
The￿structure￿and￿function￿correspond￿to￿the￿greatest￿possible￿extent￿to￿the￿rollover￿protection
system￿in￿the￿F33.￿In￿the￿event￿of￿the￿car￿rolling￿over,￿two￿rollover￿protection￿bars￿extend￿from￿the
module￿within￿a￿split￿second￿and￿lock￿positively.￿This,￿together￿with￿the￿reinforced￿windshield￿frame
protects￿the￿occupants￿in￿the￿vehicle.
An￿accident￿situation￿that￿is￿critical￿to￿the￿occupants￿is￿identified￿by￿the￿sensor￿system￿and
signalled￿to￿the￿Crash￿Safety￿Module￿(ACSM).￿This￿module￿outputs￿a￿signal￿for￿activating￿the￿two
electromagnetic￿actuators￿in￿the￿rollover￿protection￿system.
The￿actuators￿release￿the￿spring-based￿rollover￿protection￿bars.￿The￿two￿rollover￿protection￿bars
extend￿within￿a￿split￿second￿and￿lock￿in￿their￿end￿position￿by￿means￿of￿an￿interlock￿pawl￿and￿toothed
strip.
