    F23￿Soft￿Top￿Technology 1.￿Introduction From￿March￿2015￿the￿2-Series￿will￿expand￿its￿model￿line￿up￿with￿the￿F23￿2-Series￿Convertible.￿Similar to￿the￿1-Series￿Convertible￿E88,￿the￿F23￿is￿a￿four-seater￿convertible￿with￿a￿fully￿automatic￿soft￿top. BMW￿2-Series￿Convertible 1.1.￿Special￿features In￿contrast￿to￿the￿E88,￿the￿F23￿has￿the￿following￿special￿features: • Soft￿top￿with￿optimized￿sound￿insulation. • The￿soft￿top￿can￿be￿opened￿and￿closed￿while￿the￿car￿is￿being driven￿up￿to￿a￿speed￿of￿approximately￿30￿mph￿/￿50￿km/h. • Fully￿recessed￿rollover￿protection￿system. • Increased￿luggage￿compartment￿capacity.
  • Page 7 F23￿Soft￿Top￿Technology 2.￿Rollover￿Protection￿System F23￿Fully￿recessed￿rollover￿protection￿system Index Explanation Serrated￿strip Interlock￿pawl Electromagnetic￿actuator In￿the￿F23￿the￿rollover￿protection￿system￿is￿installed￿as￿standard￿behind￿the￿rear￿head￿restraints￿and￿is used￿for￿passive￿safety￿purposes.￿It￿is￿fully￿recessed,￿to￿ensure￿a￿clean￿design￿compared￿to￿the￿E88. The￿structure￿and￿function￿correspond￿to￿the￿greatest￿possible￿extent￿to￿the￿rollover￿protection system￿in￿the￿F33.￿In￿the￿event￿of￿the￿car￿rolling￿over,￿two￿rollover￿protection￿bars￿extend￿from￿the module￿within￿a￿split￿second￿and￿lock￿positively.￿This,￿together￿with￿the￿reinforced￿windshield￿frame protects￿the￿occupants￿in￿the￿vehicle. An￿accident￿situation￿that￿is￿critical￿to￿the￿occupants￿is￿identified￿by￿the￿sensor￿system￿and signalled￿to￿the￿Crash￿Safety￿Module￿(ACSM).￿This￿module￿outputs￿a￿signal￿for￿activating￿the￿two electromagnetic￿actuators￿in￿the￿rollover￿protection￿system. The￿actuators￿release￿the￿spring-based￿rollover￿protection￿bars.￿The￿two￿rollover￿protection￿bars extend￿within￿a￿split￿second￿and￿lock￿in￿their￿end￿position￿by￿means￿of￿an￿interlock￿pawl￿and￿toothed strip.

For￿functional￿checks￿the￿rollover￿protection￿system￿can￿be￿activated￿with￿the￿workshop￿information system￿ISTA￿and￿then￿manually￿deactivated￿again. Before￿the￿activation￿of￿the￿rollover￿protection￿system￿with￿the￿workshop￿information￿system￿ISTA, the￿soft￿top￿must￿be￿open.￿In￿addition,￿the￿two￿upper￿covers￿of￿the￿rollover￿protection￿bar￿must￿be unclipped￿and￿set￿down￿beside￿the￿openings.￿Otherwise,￿the￿soft￿top￿can￿be￿destroyed￿and￿the￿cover at￿the￿rollover￿protection￿system￿may￿sustain￿damage.   • Page 9 F23￿Soft￿Top￿Technology 3.￿Wind￿Deflector F23￿Wind￿deflector Index Explanation Plastic￿air￿ducts￿("Flaps") Rotary￿lever The￿wind￿deflector￿(SA 387),￿is￿standard￿for￿the￿F23.￿It￿reduces￿the￿wind￿turbulence￿within￿the passenger￿compartment. Additional￿plastic￿air￿ducts￿("Flaps")￿have￿been￿integrated￿at￿the￿side￿of￿the￿frame.￿They￿reduce￿the air￿flow￿along￿the￿side￿trim￿panel￿even￿more￿efficiently￿so￿that￿there￿is￿a￿noticeable￿improvement, particularly￿in￿the￿outer￿arm￿area. The￿wind￿deflector￿can￿be￿installed￿and￿removed￿by￿one￿person. In￿order￿to￿store￿luggage￿on￿the￿rear￿seat￿when￿the￿wind￿deflector￿is￿installed,￿the￿bottom￿frame￿can￿be folded￿upwards.￿The￿two￿rear￿mounting￿bolts￿must￿be￿slackened￿using￿one￿of￿the￿two￿rotary￿levers. In￿this￿position￿the￿rear￿seat￿backrest￿can￿also￿be￿folded￿down. The￿overall￿height￿of￿the￿wind￿deflector￿is￿low￿when￿it￿is￿folded￿up￿as￿the￿upper￿frame￿folds￿into￿the lower￿frame.￿It￿can￿therefore￿be￿stowed￿in￿the￿luggage￿compartment￿to￿save￿space.
  • Page 10 F23￿Soft￿Top￿Technology 4.￿Soft￿Top F23￿Soft￿top The￿F23￿is￿a￿convertible￿with￿a￿fully￿automatic,￿electro-hydraulic￿soft￿top.￿The￿soft￿top￿of￿the￿F23￿is essentially￿based￿on￿the￿soft￿top￿of￿the￿E88. Operation￿is￿done￿by￿using￿the￿soft￿top￿button￿in￿the￿center￿console.￿In￿vehicles￿with￿the￿optional equipment￿Comfort￿Access￿(SA 322),￿the￿soft￿top￿can￿also￿be￿opened￿and￿closed￿using￿the￿ID transmitter. Similar￿to￿the￿E88,￿it￿takes￿approximately￿22￿seconds￿for￿the￿convertible￿top￿to￿open￿and￿close. What￿is￿new￿is￿the￿fact￿that￿the￿soft￿top￿can￿now￿be￿opened￿or￿closed￿up￿to￿a￿driving￿speed￿of 30￿mph￿/￿50 km/h￿(E88:￿starts￿up￿to￿25￿mph￿/￿40 km/h,￿continue￿driving￿up￿to￿30￿mph￿/￿50 km/h). The￿soft￿top￿is￿driven￿by￿a￿central￿hydraulic￿unit,￿which￿in￿turn￿is￿activated￿by￿the￿convertible￿top module￿(CVM).￿To￿monitor￿the￿movement￿processes￿the￿CVM￿reads￿a￿total￿of￿ten￿sensors. A￿new￿soft￿top￿cover￿with￿improved￿sound￿insulation￿is￿also￿used,￿consisting￿of￿outer￿fleece￿material, insulating￿material￿and￿under-fleece.￿The￿soft￿top￿cover￿can￿be￿ordered￿in￿two￿colors￿Moon￿light￿black and￿Brown￿with￿silver￿effect.￿The￿headlining￿is￿always￿black.

The￿hydraulic￿unit￿is￿located￿at￿the￿rear￿right￿in￿the￿luggage￿compartment.￿The￿hydraulic￿fluid￿does￿not have￿to￿be￿changed￿(life-time￿oil￿filling).￿When￿topping￿up￿the￿hydraulic￿fluid,￿for￿e.g.￿due￿to￿a￿leak,￿the hydraulic￿unit￿must￿be￿removed￿from￿the￿foam￿housing.￿The￿hydraulic￿system￿is￿automatically￿bled￿in the￿oil￿reservoir. The￿temperature￿of￿the￿hydraulic￿pump￿is￿determined￿by￿the￿convertible￿top￿module￿(CVM)￿by￿means of￿a￿computing￿model.￿The￿hydraulic￿pump￿can￿run￿without￿interruption￿for￿roughly￿8 minutes.￿The￿soft top￿can￿be￿operated￿again￿after￿the￿hydraulic￿pump￿has￿cooled￿down. The￿system￿pressure￿is￿restricted￿by￿a￿pressure￿limiting￿valve￿to￿170 bar￿(+ 20 bar).￿The￿operating pressure￿is￿maximum￿190￿bar￿at￿room￿temperature. If￿the￿soft￿top￿movement￿is￿interrupted,￿the￿hydraulic￿system￿is￿automatically￿depressurized￿after￿a certain￿time.￿When￿terminal￿15￿is￿activated,￿this￿happens￿after￿approximately￿12￿minutes;￿otherwise, after￿a￿few￿seconds.￿As￿a￿result,￿the￿soft￿top￿may￿move￿unintentionally￿￿The￿soft￿top￿compartment￿lid￿is closed￿in￿sections,￿whereby￿the￿changeover￿valve 1￿is￿supplied￿with￿current￿on￿a￿rotating￿basis.
