Print Engine
The duplex printer cabinet contains two Electron Beam Imaging print
engines. The first print engine images the back side of the web, while the
second print engine images the front side of the web.
The print engine is the heart of the printing system, and is responsible for
generating the latent electrostatic image on the imaging drum, for toning and
transfixing that image, then for cleaning the imaging drum for the next print
cycle. For an overview of the Electron Beam Imaging process, refer to the
"The Printing Process" section in Chapter 1.
For each page printed, the print engines:
1. Coordinates and positions the imaging drum, printhead, and pressure
roller precisely.
2. Controls the amount of toner that is attracted to the (selectively charged)
imaging drum.
3. Removes any toner that is left over on the imaging drum, once the image
is transferred onto paper.
4. Erases any residual charge from the imaging drum.
Interlock switches, if not engaged fully, stop the printing system from
printing. These interlock switches are disengaged when:
the printhead is removed (unseated);
The plastic protective covers of the printer cabinet are open.
The following illustration shows one of the two print engines in the printer
cabinet with the front door panels removed. The toner assembly is to the left,
and the engine card cage is to the right. In the middle you can see the pressure
roller, with the web running directly above it. The imaging drum contacts the
upper surface of the web, and can be seen just beneath the housing.
Note
The illustration depicts the print engine on the right hand side
of the duplex printer cabinet. On the left-side print engine, the
toner assembly is on the right and the engine card cage is on
the left of the print engine.
