Chapter 1. Reference Information

This chapter provides an overview of the Eserver pSeries 650, including a logical description and a
physical overview of the system. Additional details pertaining to the 7311 Model D10 I/O Subsystem and
7311 Model D20 I/O Subsystem are also provided. They include the following:
v Memory overview and ordering rules
v General description of the operator panel
v Cabling rules
v System location rules and descriptions
v Powering on and powering off the system
v Power flow
v Data flow

pSeries 650 Overview

The pSeries 650 is a multiprocessor, multibus system packaged in one processor subsystem drawer and
up to eight I/O subsystem drawers. The Eserver pSeries 650 processor subsystem drawer is 8 EIA units
high and can be mounted in a 19-inch rack. The processor subsystem drawer houses the processors,
memory, and a base set of I/O. Four 2-way processor card slots provide 2, 4, 6, or 8-way pSeries 650
configurations.
Eight DDR (double data rate) memory DIMM slots are available on each processor card. Memory DIMMs
must be installed in quads. DIMM quads are available in 2 GB (4x512 MB), 4GB (4x1 GB), and 8 GB (4x2
GB) sizes. The resulting total system memory is from 2 GB up to 64 GB.
The processor subsystem drawer also contains the following:
v Seven hot-pluggable PCI-X slots utilizing a PCI adapter cassette mechanism
v Internal Ultra3 SCSI and external SCSI connections
v 10/100 Ethernet (ISA-based)
v Keyboard and mouse ports
v Four serial ports
v Two hardware management console ports
v Four hot-pluggable disk drive bays.
v Two hot-pluggable media bays
v Diskette drive
v Service processor
v One (up to four) RIO or RIO-2 I/O expansion ports
The I/O capacity of the system can be expanded by the addition of up to three addititional RIO or RIO-2
expansion cards and up to eight PCI-X I/O subsystem drawers. Both the 7311 Model D10 I/O Subsystem
and the 7311 Model D20 I/O Subsystem are supported in pSeries 650 systems.
Cables are used to connect the processor subsystem to the I/O subsystem drawers. These cables include:
v SPCN (System Power Control Network) cables
v RIO (Remote Input Output) cables
The Eserver pSeries 650 system supports up to eight logical partitions. Logical partitioning requires the
use of a Hardware Management Console (HMC). The HMC operates outside the scope of any single
operating system image and is used to manage and monitor the platform resources as well as provide a
service focal point.
