    1. Automatic Jam Recovery. If a media jam occurs, and if the printer power remains on, the Crown II printer is able to reprint the page or pages in the engine at the time of the jam after the jam has been cleared. This enables you to collect your document(s) from the printer without missing pages and without resending the print job.
  • Page 11 Crown II printer in a specific application. This allows the Crown II printer to receive and store many print jobs, and it allows print jobs to be spooled. The process of storing documents before printing is referred to as Compile-Ahead technology.
  • Page 12: Rasterization

For monochrome Crown II printers, the Frame Buffer contains a black bitmap only. Crown II color printers translate the Display List blocks into either four separate bitmaps, (one for cyan, one for magenta, one for yellow, and one for black) or a black bitmap only for monochrome output.

  • Page 17 ABOUT THE FEATURES Some features of a Crown II printer depend upon the installation of a particular option. In addition, a certain option or environment may be recommended, although not absolutely necessary, to take full advantage of the feature. To clearly identify this, we use the following symbols.
  • Page 18: Serverless Printing

Not only do you have to wait a relatively long time before the printer starts to process the job, but all other users on the network experience a slower response time as well.
  • Page 19: Electronic Document Collation

When collate is not selected and the copy count is set to 3, the application sends the 4-page file once, with a copy count of 3 embedded in the data stream. A non-Crown II printer usually prints page 1 three times, followed by page 2 three times, page 3 three times, and page 4 three times.
  • Page 20: Emulation Context Switching

This Crown II feature ensures the correct handling of any multi- environmental situation, utilizing multiple printer emulations. Although this feature is predominant in networked environments, the same situation occurs when using multiple Crown II interfaces, each receiving data with a different printer emulation. • Page 24: Booklet Printing

BOOKLET PRINTING Automatic production of booklets is an important Crown II feature. It allows you to print your document in a book format. This is of special interest to writers, allowing them to examine the final document immediately. A booklet is printed as four logical pages onto both sides of one physical sheet. All printed sheets are then folded into what looks like a book.
  • Page 25: Printer - Based Accounting

PRINTER BASED ACCOUNTING Crown II printers with an internal hard disk may utilize Printer-Based Accounting. With Printer-Based Accounting, individual print job information is saved on the printer’s internal hard disk in an accounting file. This information can be retrieved from the printer, filtered in regards to the individual customer requirements and exported into a spreadsheet program in order to be analyzed.
  • Page 26 Priority This documents the document’s assigned priority. The default size for the accounting file on the printer’s internal hard disk is 1 MB, but you can reconfigured it when necessary (refer to entry has a size between 200 and 300 bytes. This means that the 1 MB default file size is sufficient for approximately 4,000 print jobs.
  • Page 27: Network Connectivity

At the same time all users may also share specific devices attached to this network. Devices, like printers, must have excellent network capabilities. Crown II printers are equipped with very powerful network capabilities, making them ideal for attaching in most network environments.
  • Page 28 When the number of users increases, the data communication to locally attached printers can become a bottleneck, especially in the case when various users require specific printer features. In many situations a network is already available, allowing one or more network printers to be used by all workstations.

  • Page 32: Color Management

COLOR MANAGEMENT This section starts with a brief introduction about color in general, and how a Crown II color laser printer processes color. Color is a visual perception involving: a. A light source. b. An object that absorbs, reflects, or transmits the light of the light source.
  • Page 33 A color laser printer, such as a Crown II color printer, ships with four toner cartridges: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Mixing equal amounts of cyan, magenta, and yellow produces black.
  • Page 34 There are many devices capable of producing colors, like a monitor, a color laser printer, a digital camera, and a scanner. To avoid a multitude of translation modules, we first need to define a standard for colors. Since color is defined as how the human eye perceives this, we introduce the CIE LAB color model (also called ‘color space,’...
  • Page 35 Simulation ICC profiles to make the printer behave like another printing device. The Crown II color ICC profile outputs the translated data as CMYK to the print engine. Downloading ICC profiles to a Crown II printer requires a hard disk (an internal hard disk is recommended).
  • Page 36 Profile Downloader utility shipped with earlier printer models. After downloading ICC profiles, reboot the printer to allow the Crown II Operating System to incorporate the profiles. Print a CMM-Profile status page to verify the successful downloading of the ICC profiles.
  • Page 37 THE COLORIFIC UTILITY The Colorific Utility is not shipped with all KONICA MINOLTA printers. Check your printer documentation to see if Colorific is supplied with your printer. Once you have selected or installed the ICC profiles, you may expect colors from your color laser printer matching the colors on your monitor.
  • Page 38 COLOR RENDERING DICTIONARIES In a previous paragraph we explained how Crown II color laser printers process color by means of ICC profiles. There is, however, another method, called Color Rendering Dictionary (CRD) color matching. Before ICC profiles were introduced, the CRD color matching was the standard color processing method, but it managed only RGB color.

  • Page 58: Crown Ii Memory Management

The family of Crown II Print Systems contains various products. Each product may have more than one model available. A model may be denoted by a suffix, like Crown II Model X or Crown II Model Y. A model introduces one or more additional features, like extra media cassettes, a duplexing unit, higher print resolution, larger media formats, etc.
  • Page 59: Virtual Memory

The data is not lost when the power is turned off. Although a Crown II printer has a number of ROMs (usually with a loading function), it is of no concern for memory management. RAM (Random Access Memory). This kind of high-speed memory can be read from and written into.
  • Page 60: Evaluation For Optimization

Virtual Memory is activated by enabling Disk Swap (see Crown II printer allows virtual memory for all memory clients, except for the Disk Cache and the Frame Buffer. VALUATION FOR OPTIMIZATION The first step in optimizing the Crown II memory clients is to define your printing needs.
  • Page 61 What resolution will you use? The value for each memory client must be divisible by 4 KB. If you, for instance, assign a value of 102 KB for a certain memory client, the Crown II Operating System automatically raises this to 104 KB.
  • Page 62 NPUT UFFERS Each active printer interface has an exclusive input buffer. The size of the input buffer should be dictated by the nature of that interface. A serial interface is a relatively slow device and, therefore, does not require a very large input buffer. An Ethernet interface, which may receive data at a high speed, may need a large input buffer.
  • Page 63 When your Crown II printer is equipped with a duplexer, the Frame Buffer needs enough memory to image 2 full faces at that resolution (twice the amount of memory as needed without a duplexer).
  • Page 64 Font Cache is immensely faster than printing characters not yet in the Font Cache. As the font cache memory fills, the printer makes room for new bitmapped characters by erasing those that have been in the Font Cache longest without being used. By increasing the memory allocated to this memory client, the printer can store more characters and spend less time erasing and replacing characters in the cache.
