Install Hydraulic Lifters
1. Lubricate the lifters and lifter bores in the
crankcase with engine oil.
NOTE: Hydraulic lifters should always be
installed in the same position as before
disassembly.
2. Install the lifters into their respective lifter bores
according to location and cylinder number
marked during assembly. See Figure 11-29.

Valve Stem Seals
NOTE: These engines use valve stem seals on the
intake and exhaust valves. Always use a new
seal before valves are installed in the
cylinder head. Also, replace the seals if they
are deteriorated or damaged in any way.
Never reuse an old seal. See Figure 11-30.

Assemble Cylinder Heads
Prior to installation, lubricate all components with
engine oil, paying particular attention to the lip of the
valve stem seal, valve stems and valve guides. Install
the following items in the order listed below using a
valve spring compressor. See Figures 11-31 and 11-32.
• Valve stem seals
• Intake and exhaust valves
• Valve spring caps
• Valve springs
• Valve spring retainers
• Valve spring keepers
