Removing the main bearings
The crankshaft turns on a roller bearing on the fly-
wheel-side crankcase half, whereas there is a ball
bearing on the clutch-side crankcase half.
CAUTION
BEFORE CARRYING OUT ANY REMOVAL/FITTING OPER-
ATION ON THE CRANKCASE, WARM IT UP WITH A HEAT
GUN TO AVOID DAMAGING ITS HOUSING.
CAUTION
BEFORE CARRYING OUT THE OPERATIONS DESCRIBED
BELOW, LOCK THE CRANKCASE HALVES ON THE COR-
RESPONDING SUPPORT PLATE.
Use the special tools and a rubber mal-
let in order to remove the pedestal
bearing for the crankshaft: - screw the
60mm (2.36 in) buffer on the handle; -
screw the 30mm (1.18 in) buffer on the
60mm (2.36 in) one.

Inspecting the crankcase halves
Using a non-aggressive solvent thoroughly clean both sections of the engine crankcase, the ball bear-
ings and all the bearing seats. Clean the seal surfaces and check that they are not damaged.
NOTE
PLACE BOTH CRANKCASE HALVES ON THE PROPER SUPPORT PLATE TO AVOID DAMAGING
THEM.

9100942 Crankcase halves support
Check that both crankcase halves are not cracked or damaged.
Check that all threads are in proper conditions.
Check that all oil seals remaining in their position are not worn or damaged.
Check all ball bearings for clearance, smoothness and potential distortions.
CAUTION
LUBRICATE BALL BEARINGS WITH ENGINE OIL BEFORE FURTHER CHECKING.
If the internal ring does not rotate smoothly and silently or if there is some noise while it turns, it means
that the bearing is faulty and must be replaced.
