MAINTAINING BLADE SHARPNESS
Use Gravely Backlapper, part no. 79524700 or equivalent.
CAUTION: Sharp edges can cut or amputate fingers
or a hand. Use sturdy gloves or padding to protect
hands when working with reels.
To provide consistent performance, the cutter blades need to be
backlapped on a regular basis, ideally after every 40 – 60 hours of
operation. 80-grit Lapping Compound is recommended (see
Accessories on page 16).
To backlap the reels:
1. Adjust the reel-to-bedknife clearance.
2. Adjust the bedknife-adjusting bolts to cause a slight friction
between the reel and the bed knife.
3. Saturate a special long-handled brush with lapping compound
and apply it to the length of the reel.
DANGER: Stay away from the reel while backlapping.
Contact with the reel or other moving parts can result
in personal injury.
DANGER: NEVER use a short-handled paint brush
for backlapping. Use a long-handled brush designed
for this operation.
4. Continue lapping until the reel runs without the intermittent
grinding sounds caused by high spots.
5. Thoroughly clean all lapping compound from the cutter unit.
6. Adjust the bedknife adjusting bolts so that the reel blades just
contact the bedknife. Each blade should cleanly cut a thin
piece of paper at all points across the bed knife.
7. Repeat for remaining reels.
REEL CONTROL SWITCH ADJUSTMENT
The reel-control switch can be adjusted to change the height where
reel rotation starts and stops when raising and lowering the mower
reels (figure 21).
To lower the height where the reels stop rotation:
1. Loosen two switch adjustment screws.
2. Move the switch further away from the swing arm.
3. Tighten the switch adjustment screws.
To raise the height where the reels stop rotation:
1. Loosen two switch adjustment screws.
2. Move the switch in toward the swing arm.
3. Tighten the switch adjustment screws.
