The category is display-only which is determined by POS T (Power O n Self Test) of the BIOS.
-- Base Memory
The POST of the BIOS w ill determine the amount of base (or conv entional) m emory installed
in the sy stem.
The v alue of the base memory is ty pically 512K for s y stems w ith 512K memory installed
on the motherboard, or 640K for s y stems w ith 640 K or more m emory installed on the
motherboard.
-- Other Memory
This refers to the memory located in the 640K to 1024K address space. This is memory that
can be used for different applications.
DOS uses this area to load dev ice driv ers to keep as much base memory free for application
programs. Most use for this area is Shadow RAM.
-- Extended Memory
The BIOS determines how much ex tended memory is present during the POST.
This is the am ount of memory located abov e 1MB in the CPU 's memory address map.
