4.2.2 BioTector Sample Injection

The BioTector analyzes a precise volume of liquid. The Sample Pump injects a pre-programmed number of
pulses (half revolutions of pump) of liquid into the reactor for each measurement and therefore the volume of
liquid included in each pulse is consistent.
Sample is initially drawn from the source by a peristaltic Sample Pump and bypassed to drain.
In TIC & TOC systems, Manual/Calibration Valve is activated to isolate any stream pressure or vacuum
coming from the sample lines. Sample Pump rotates forward for 2 pulses by default to remove any
pressure/vacuum within the pump tube. Sample Valve and Reactor Valve activates, Sample Pump rotates
forward and injects a known volume of sample liquid into the reactor lines. Sample Valve and Reactor Valve
deactivates, and Oxygen Valve activates. The sample bypass lines are purged and emptied using Oxygen
carrier gas. When the lines are emptied, Oxygen Valve deactivates. Sample Valve and Reactor Valve
activates again, and the sample sitting between the Sample Valve and the Mixer Reactor is injected into the
reactor using oxygen flow with the reactivation of Oxygen Valve. Acid Pump activates and the TIC acid is
injected into the Mixer Reactor. Cleaning Valve activates. Sample Pump rotates reverse for a preprogrammed
period of time and places a known quantity of oxidized liquid, discharged from the previous analysis cycle,
into the Reactor Valve.
In TC systems, the sample injection is carried out similar to the one described for TIC & TOC systems above
but unlike TIC acid, the base reagent (e.g. Sodium Hydroxide) is injected into the Mixer Reactor after the
sample injection.
Detailed information on sample injection is available, in presentation and video formats, in the MMC/SD card
shipped with the BioTector. It is recommended to review these files to understand BioTector sample injection.
