Software Installation

This chapter contains a description of the files on the NI-488.2 distribution disks and
instructions for installing your NI-488.2 software.

NI-488.2 Software Components

The NI-488.2 software for Windows includes the following components.
• setup.exe is a menu-driven program that installs the NI-488.2 software and
updates system.ini, the Windows system configuration file.
• gpib.dll is a 16-bit dynamic link library that implements the NI-488 and
NI-488.2 functions.
• gpib.ini is the GPIB configuration information file that describes the default
configuration of the NI-488.2 software. It is accessed and modified by the GPIB
software configuration utility.
• The Hardware Diagnostic Test, ibdiag.exe, is a program that you can use to test
the GPIB hardware and ensure that it is functioning properly.
• The Software Diagnostic Test, ibtest.exe, is the Windows NI-488.2 software
installation test.
• GPIB Information, gpibinfo.exe, is a utility you can use to obtain information
about your GPIB hardware and software, such as the version of the NI-488.2
software and the type of interface board you are using.
• The GPIB software configuration utility, ibconf.cpl, is a control panel applet
that is installed in the Windows System directory. It is used to configure the
NI-488.2 software for Windows. Like other control panel applets, it is located in
the Control Panel, which is in the Main group of the Program Manager.
• The GPIB software configuration utility help file, ibconf.hlp, is a Windows help
file that gives information about the GPIB software configuration utility. This file is
also installed in the Windows System directory.
• Win16 Interactive Control, wibic.exe, is an interactive communication utility that
you can use to communicate with GPIB devices from the keyboard. You can also
use the Win16 Interactive Control utility to troubleshoot problems.
• The interactive control help file, wibic.hlp, is a Windows help file that gives
information about the Interactive Control utilities.
