7. To remove the shifter rod and fork, the bolt, spring
and ball should be removed at the outside of the
case. .
8. Remove both the input and hi/low shifter gear and
shaft assemblies, along with the shifter rod and
fork. See Figure 44.

9. Remove the final drive gear. See Figure 45.
10.Inspection and repair
a. Axle supports.
b. Case and cover.
c. Shafts and gears.
d. Shifter mechanism (two speed).

f. Replace any worn or damaged parts.
11.Assemble the center section reversing the
disassembly procedure, watching out for the
following items:
a. After the shifter rod is positioned, install the ball,
then spring and set screw. Turn set screw in until
the head or screw contacts the case (two speed).
b. Be sure that the thrust washers and spacers are
between every shaft and case and cover.
c. Use loctite on the differential bolts, bolt heads
are to be installed up.
d. Install a new gasket. Apply a thin coat of grease
to gasket to hold it in place for assembling.
e. When installing the axles in to the case and
cover apply grease to the splines to avoid
damaging the oil seals.

1. Check the roller bearings on the axles, remove
any rust and clean.
2. Clean the axle supports and inspect.
1. Check for leaks or cracks.
2. Replace the oil seals.
3. Inspect and replace the needle bearings if
needed.
1. Check the teeth for wear, pitting or breakage.
2. Inspect the bearing surfaces for smoothness.
3. Inspect the gears and shafts for out of round.
4. Splines should allow a smooth fit. Rotate the
meshing parts for a better fit if binding seems
excessive.
1. Check the spring for tension and ball for wear.
2. Check the shifter rod grooves for wear. Be
sure the snap ring sharp edges goes away
from the shifter fork, on both shifter forks.
3. Inspect the shifter fork for straightness and
wear.
1. Check security of the parts.
2. Check shifter collar for wear (two speed).
3. Check the ball bearings forward and ease of
rotation.
