Winter Driving

Have your car winterized at an author
ized MERCEDES-BENZ dealer before
the onset of winter.
Engine oil change: If " year-round"
multigrade engine oil is not used,
be sure to use an SAE grade
based on ambient tem perature.
For recom m ended engine oil vis
cosities refer to " Fuels, Coolants,
Lubricants, e tc ." and last page.
For diesel fuels, refer to page 96
and last page.
A nticorrosion/antifreeze in the
coolant: Check an tico rrosio n /a n ti
freeze protection periodically. For
capacity refer to " Fuels, Coolants,
Lubricants, e tc ." .
Additive in the windshield and
headlamp washing system : Add
windshield washer solvent to the
water.
Test battery: Battery capacity
drops with decreasing ambient
tem perature. A well charged bat
tery ensures that the engine can
always be started, even at low
ambient tem peratures.
Tires: We recom m end M + S radial
tires on all fo u r wheels fo r the w in
te r season. Observe perm issible
maximum speed fo r M + S radial
tires and the legal speed limit.
Block heater: The electrical plug is
located in fron t of the radiator
(behind the grill) and can be
plugged into ordinary household
outlets. One o r tw o hours o f oper
ation is usually sufficient to pre
warm the engine before starting.
The block heater can be left
plugged in overnight, if desired.

Tire Chains

Use only tire chains that are tested
and recom m ended by us. Any author
ized MERCEDES-BENZ dealer will be
glad to advise you on this subject.
Chains should only be used on the
rear wheels. Adhere to the manufac
tu re r's mounting instructions.
A fter driving a short distance retigh-

Tire chains should only be driven on
snow at speeds not to exceed
50 km /h (30 mph). Remove chains as
soon as possible when driving on
roads w ithout snow.
