Upgrading from the SMART-2SL
Array Controller
Users of the Compaq SMART-2SL may consider upgrading to the new Smart
Array 221 Controller. This appendix provides an upgrade procedure for moving
arrayed drives from the SMART-2SL Array Controller to the Smart Array 221
Controller. All user data and configuration information will be retained after the
upgrade process.
IMPORTANT: Array configuration information is transferred automatically
during the upgrade process. However, this is a one-way process. After
upgrading to the Smart Array 221 Controller, a manual reconfiguration
procedure is required to move the drives and data back to the SMART-2SL
Array Controller.
To upgrade your system by replacing the SMART-2SL Array Controller with a
new Smart Array 221 Controller:
1. Perform a complete backup of all affected drives. This is a safety
precaution only. If properly executed, this upgrade procedure will not
affect the arrayed data or drive location.
2. Upgrade your OS device driver to the new Smart Array 221 Controller
driver. The new drivers have been optimized to support the latest
features and capabilities of the Smart Array 221 Controller. The driver
upgrade process is OS-dependent but is not difficult. See the readme
information for your OS on the Compaq SmartStart and Support
Software CD, or see Chapter 7, depending on your OS.
3. Upgrade your System ROM to the most current version using the
Compaq System ROMPaq v2.22 or later. This step is a fundamental
requirement. The System ROM must be upgraded before installing the
Smart Array 221 Controller. Your Smart Array 221 Controller Option
Kit may include a diskette containing System ROMPaq v2.22 or later. If
so, use that diskette to upgrade the system ROM. Otherwise, System
ROMPaq is distributed on the Compaq SmartStart and Support Software
CD included in the Smart Array 221 Controller option kit.
4. Perform a normal shutdown and turn OFF the server.
