2. The lawn mower will self-propel, but the ground speed is too slow.
a. Check the transmission for leaks. If a leak is visible see "Transmission leaks oil." on

PROCEDURE" on
3. An abnormally loud growling noise can be heard
from the transmission under load.
Some transmission noise is normal. Compare the noise to
another HRX217HYA/HZA mower. If the noise is significantly
louder than normal, the fluid level is probably low. Inspect for
leaks (see symptom #6) and proceed to the "TRANSMISSION
FLUID CHANGE AND BENCH TEST PROCEDURE"
on page 2-21.
Perform a 30-ft ground speed test as shown on
time is less than 5.7 seconds (new unit specification), then the
fluid is not low and the noise should be considered normal.
NOTE: If the fluid level is even slightly low, a growling noise
can occur. Be sure to fill to the upper limit.
4. The shift lever moves several clicks back on its
own when engaging the drive clutch lever.
This problem is usually caused by vibration transmitted
through the cable and handle due to low transmission fluid
level. A growling noise is usually heard from the transmission.
Hold the lever in the fast position and perform the ground
speed tests shown on
seconds (new unit specification), the fluid is not low and the
problem is in the shift lever linkage. Otherwise proceed to the
transmission fluid change and bench test procedure.
Inspect the transmission for leaks "Transmission leaks oil."

5. Lawn mower propels but cannot be pulled
backwards when the drive clutch lever is released.
a. Check the control arm for binding.
b. Disconnect the drive clutch cable from the upper handlebar
and confirm there is cable slack at the transmission control
arm. Pull the lawn mower backwards.
Can be Rolled Backwards: Inspect the drive clutch cable
for damage or binding. Replace if necessary and proceed
to "DRIVE CLUTCH CABLE ADJUSTMENT AND
GROUND SPEED MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE"
on page 2-24.
