9928 Premium Welding
Fume Respirator
Data Sheet
Main Features
The 3M 9928 respirator provides lightweight, effective,
comfortable and hygienic respiratory protection against dusts,
mists and metal fumes. Its convex shape enhances wearer
comfort and allows a good fit over a wide range of face sizes;
the 3M™ Cool Flow™ exhalation valve reduces moisture
build-up, particularly in hot and humid work conditions.
The 4-point adjustable straps and adjustable nose clip ensure
a proper fit.
The 3M 9928 Premium Welding Fume Respirator has been
designed specifically for welding applications to provide
protection against Ozone and welding fume, plus relief from
nuisance odours.
The 3M 9928 does not require costly and time-consuming
maintenance.
Applications
• Iron Foundries
• Steel Foundries
• Ship Building/Ship Repairing • Metal Manufacture
• Battery Manufacture
• Welding and Soldering
Approvals
The 3M 9928 has been shown to meet the Basic Safety
Requirements under Article 10 and 11B of the European
Community Directive 89/686. An EC-type examination
certificate No. 54976 is in force issued by the British Standards
institution and the product is produced at a manufacturing
location certified to ISO9002 by the British Standards
institution. The product is CE marked.

Standards
The product has been tested to the NEW European Norm
EN149:2001 and has met the requirements of category FFP2
in this standard.
The main performance tests in this standard are:
• Total Inward Leakage
Ten test subjects perform a series of exercises while walking
on a tread-mill. The amount of contaminant leaking into the
respirator through the filter, face seal and, where fitted, the
valve is measured. For category FFP2 the leakage must not
exceed 8% for eight out of the ten results.
• Filter Penetration
The filter efficiency of twelve respirators is tested against a
sodium chloride aerosol and a paraffin oil aerosol.
For the FFP2 category both aerosol penetrations must be
below 6%
• Flammability
Four respirators are individually passed through a flame at
800°C ±50°C at a speed of 6 cm/sec. The respirators shall
not continue to burn after removal from the flame.
• Breathing Resistance
The resistance created by the respirator filter to an airflow of
30 L/min and 95 L/min are evaluated. For an FFP2 device this
must not exceed 0.7 mbar and 2.4 mbar at the respective flows.
• Information
A range of information, specified in this standard, must be
provided on the packaging of the product.
A full copy EN149:2001 can be purchased from your national
standards body.
Correct use
The respirator may be used in concentrations of solid, water
based and non-volatile liquid based aerosols up to 10 times
the Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) BS4275:1997.
It can also be used to protect the wearer against Ozone gas
generated in welding applications in concentrations up to
10 times the OEL.
