a. Select an Adequate source of Input Power
Before connecting input cables to the electrical power supply service, check voltage, amperage and
phase ratings of the power supply service. Make certain that the capacity of the service is adequate
for the power requirements of the unit being connected to it. Make certain also that the electrical
service used as the source of input power to the unit is GROUNDED.
b. Install Input Conductors in Converter
Refer to Figure 2, Section 1-1 to select conductors of proper size for converter input.
Route 3-phase input cable through hole in the bottom rear side of the unit. Connect input cable to
terminals provided on the bottom side of the circuit breaker accessed through the rear door.
Connect cable ground wire to the ground lug provided (marked as GND).
c. Install Cable for Remote Control START/STOP Pushbutton Station (if used)
If it is desired that the converter be operated from a remote location, as well as from the converter's
control panel, the cables from a remote control pushbutton station may be readily connected to the
converter. For instructions on how to install the cables from a remote control pushbutton station,
refer to Diagram 281027, sheet 2, in Chapter 6.
For this installation, the remote control pushbutton station that is used may be provided by the
customer, or it may be purchased from Hobart Brothers Company. When purchased from Hobart
Brothers, this optional item is available as Part Number 281338.
If the pushbutton station used is provided by the customer, it should conform in electrical functions
and wiring to the Hobart item described above.
WARNING
d. Install Input Cable at Electrical Power Supply Service
After turning off disconnect switch intended for supply to the unit, connect the unit's input
connectors to the disconnect switch. Connect also the converter's grounding conductor to the
ground to which the disconnect switch is connected.
CAUTION
e. Other Locations for Cable Entrance
Preferably, input and output cable entrance should be made through the holes provided in the
converter cabinet. If other locations are chosen for cable entrance, make certain to do the following:
(1) Choose a location that will allow cable to run free of interference with other internal components.
(2) While drilling, do not allow metal particles to accumulate inside the unit.
(3) Use suitable cable strain relief and seal cable entrances for weather.
f. Check Converter No-Load Operation
This converter operational check should be made before the output cables are connected to the
converter and to a load. Proceed as follows.
(1) Make certain that the converter input circuit breaker is OFF.
(2) Close disconnect switch supplying power to the unit. Using a suitable voltmeter, check for correct
voltage (each phase) at input side of converter circuit breaker.
Chapter 1-2
Page 2
Make certain that the electrical power supply service disconnecting means is off
before connecting input cables to the power supply service.
If cable entrance hole(s) must be made in the cabinet, take special care to
prevent metal particles from accumilating on and around components inside the
cabinet and then carefully remove all metal particles after hole(s) are made.
