3. Secure the steering wheel to the shaft with a
jam nut and tighten it to 27 to 35 N∙m (20 to 26
ft-lb) (Figure 3).

hands after handling.
Note:
If the battery is not filled with electrolyte or
activated, bulk electrolyte with 1.260 specific gravity
must be purchased from a local battery supply outlet
and added to the battery.
DANGER
Battery electrolyte contains sulfuric acid
which is a deadly poison and causes severe
burns.
• Do not drink electrolyte and avoid contact
with skin, eyes, or clothing. Wear safety
glasses to shield your eyes and rubber
gloves to protect your hands.
• Fill the battery where clean water is always
available for flushing the skin.
1. Purchase bulk electrolyte with 1.260 specific
gravity from a local battery supply outlet.

4. Remove the filler caps from the battery and
slowly fill each cell until electrolyte is just above
the plates.
5. Install the filler caps and connect a 3 to 4 A
battery charger to the battery posts. Charge the
battery at a rate of 3 to 4 A for 4 to 8 hours.
WARNING
Charging the battery produces gasses
that can explode.
• Keep sparks and flames away from
battery.
• Never smoke near the battery.
6. When the battery is charged, disconnect the
charger from the electrical outlet and battery
posts.
7. Remove the filler caps. Slowly add electrolyte
to each cell until the level is up to the fill ring.
Install the filler caps.
Important:
Electrolyte will overflow onto other parts
of the machine and severe corrosion and
deterioration will result.
8. Install the positive cable (red) to the positive (+)
terminal and the negative cable (black) to the
negative (–) terminal of the battery and secure
them with bolts and nuts
that the positive (+) terminal is all of the way
onto the post and the cable is positioned snug
to the battery. The cable must not contact the
battery cover.
