Numeric fields are fields that normally contain only numbers or the characters minus
(-), period (.) or DUP. In the example, the fields following Identification Number:
and Salary: would probably have been established as numeric fields.
When a numeric field is defined in the display image, the 3708 allows you to enter
any characters except lower case alphabetic characters in the normal way. You can
override the numeric attribute of the field by entering a blank character in the first
position of the field. Any character (including lower case alphabetic) can be entered
while the blank is in the first position of the field. If your input requires a valid
character in the first position as well, you must enter this character after having
typed all the remaining characters. (If you want to enter a lower case alphabetic
character into a numeric field that is only 1 byte long, first enter a blank into the
field, and then you can overlay the blank with the lower case alphabetic character.)
