6 Troubleshooting
This chapter describes basic troubleshooting tech-
niques to identify and correct system problems.
When help is required, contact Sprint Products
Group Technical Services at 1-800-791-1110. Identify
the system as a 616 and have the following informa-
tion available:
Number of lines and extensions on the system
Type of phones connected to the system - busi-
ness with display, business without display or
single line telephone
Type of analog devices, such as analog
adapters, fax machines, etc., are attached to the
system
Types troubleshooting procedures, if any, used
Whether you are a certified Protegé ® techni-
cian
1. Normal Operation
A correctly installed 616 system will exhibit the
following events and indications when turned on.
1) The power LED will light immediately.
2) Approximately 10 seconds after start up the
power LED will blink rapidly.
3) All phones that are not connected to an analog
adapter will ring twice and then become oper-
ational.
If any of these events or indications do not occur,
the system may not operate properly.
2. Upgrading the System
Software
When upgrading the software on a 616 system, the
following procedure should be followed:
1) If mounted, remove the KSU and place it on a
solid surface. Remove the four screws from the
cover.

2) Connect the grounding wrist strap to an
approved ground.
3) Find the anti-static bag containing the EPROM
chip for the Common Control Board.
4) Place an anti-static bag on a level surface, and,
observing static discharge precautions, place
the KSU on the bag.
5) Being careful not to touch the chip pins,
remove the EPROM from its carrier.
6) Insert the EPROM in its socket. Align the notch
on the chip with the notch on the socket. Make
sure that all pins are properly seated.
7) Replace the KSU cover and the four screws
that hold it in place.
8) Move the RAM switch from On to Reset. Wait
10 seconds and return the switch to the On
position.
9) Return the KSU to its wall mount (if applica-
ble).
10) Apply power.
11) Observe the heartbeat LED on the KSU side
panel for proper indication.
3. Cold Starting the System
(Defaulting the Database)
To perform a System Cold Start, follow the steps
below:
1)
Enter programming through a display phone
by pressing the Function, #, * keys. A prompt
for the "DB PSWD" will be displayed.
2)
Using the dial pad, enter the password and
press the "show" key.
3)
Proceed to the "Control" category by pressing
the "next" key.
4)
When "6. Control" is displayed, press the
"show" key. The first item displayed is "Voice
Mail."
