Introduction
Can I point my cameras to my neighbour's property?
You must respect your neighbour's right to privacy. CCTV should not be directed into someone
else's home or property. If you misuse your CCTV system you could face criminal or civil
consequences. Using CCTV to infringe on another person's privacy on more than one occasion
could be considered as harassment which is a serious criminal/civil offence. Using CCTV images
for voyeuristic or anti-social purposes are also offences that the police can deal with under
criminal law.
Do I need to display CCTV signs?
No, if cameras are only monitoring within your property.
However for monitoring outside your property, it is strongly recommended to display signs and in
any event you must comply with the Data protection Act 1998 and related ICO guidance. In
addition, signs informing people they are entering an area covered by CCTV may help deter
individuals from committing offences against you or your property.
