Symptoms
Engine overheats

Probable Causes
Engine cooling fins are plugged.
Engine oil level is low.
Carburetor air intake tube is plugged.
Air cleaning element is plugged or
missing.
Throttle cable is sticking.
Choke cable is sticking.
Spark plugs are defective.
Spark plugs are fouled.
Fuel supply is restricted.
Fuel line is plugged, pinched, or kinked. Clean or replace fuel line.
Fuel leaks into the crankcase.
Engine oil level is high.
Fuel octane is incorrect.
Throttle cable is faulty or out of
adjustment.
Air cleaning element is plugged.
Engine is overheating.
Electrical connections are loose.
Engine cooling fins are plugged.
Throttle cable is sticking.
Choke cable is sticking.
Fuel is stale or dirty.
Fuel line is plugged.
Fuel type is incorrect.
Fuel leaks into the crankcase.
Spark plug wiring is defective.
Spark plug is defective.
Spark plug is fouled.
Carburetor is not adjusted correctly.
Air cleaner is plugged.

Suggested Remedies
Allow engine to cool. Clean cooling
fins with high pressure air.
Add specified engine oil.
Clean air intake tube.
Replace or clean air cleaner with air.
Clean and oil throttle cable. Replace
worn or damaged cable.
Clean and oil choke cable. Replace
worn or damaged cable.
Replace spark plugs.
Clean spark plugs or replace.
Check for dirt in fuel tank.
Clean or replace fouled spark plugs.
Verify choke position is not stuck on.
Drain excess oil, check for gas in the
oil. Change if gas is present.
Use unleaded 87 minimum octane.
Adjust or replace throttle cable.
Replace or clean air cleaner with air.

Reattach electrical connections.
Allow engine to cool. Clean cooling
fins with high pressure air.
Clean and oil throttle cable. Replace
worn or damaged cable.
Clean and oil choke cable. Replace
worn or damaged cable.
Replace fuel with new fuel.

Use unleaded 87 minimum octane.
(Methanol not allowed).
Clean or replace fouled spark plugs.
Verify choke position is not stuck on.

Adjust carburetor.
Replace air cleaner.
