Ignition System Testing

Whenever troubleshooting an electrical problem, first check all terminal connections to be sure they are clean and tight. Use the
following flow chart as a guide for troubleshooting. NOTE: The brown (BN) wire on youth models carries 12V key-on power.
Condition: No spark or intermittent spark.
Turn key switch to
ON.
Disconnect 2-wire
connector from
CDI
Measure between
engine ground and
BROWN wire.
Battery Voltage?
YES
Disconnect 4-wire
plug from CDI.
Check the BLACK
wire for continuity
to ground.
Continuity?
YES
Disconnect DG
wire from ignition
coil.
Check for
continuity between
plug and key
switch in ON
position.
Perform CDI
output test, pulser
coil output test and
ignition coil
resistance test
detailed within this
chapter.
Battery voltage on RED
NO
YES
circuit at key switch?
NO
Check 15A fuse
and battery.
NO
Check wiring.
Continuity?
NO
YES
Components
NO
pass tests?
YES
If vehicle still has no spark,
repeat troubleshooting steps.
Pay close attention to
condition of wires and
connections.
Battery voltage on
BROWN wire at key
NO
switch at ON position?
YES
Check wiring
between switch
and CDI.
Check wiring and/
or key switch.
Replace suspect
components and
recheck.
ELECTRICAL
Replace key
switch.
