One pattern can be selected for counter-top mode and another for
hand-held mode via programming bar code in the M2000 Series
Product Reference Guide (p/n 72-39696-xx). For hand-held mode,
you may alternatively select a pattern by pressing the Scan
Pattern Mode Selector button when the scanner is lifted off the
counter.

To scan in hand-held mode, pick up the scanner and hold it within
the scanning range for the bar code. A sensor on the bottom of the
scanner's stand detects when the scanner is lifted off the counter,
and automatically switches to the programmed hand-held laser
pattern.
