Spark Arresting Screen in
Muffler
In some countries the muffler is
equipped with a spark arresting screen.
If the engine is down on power,
N
check the spark arresting screen in
the muffler.
Wait for the muffler to cool down.
N
Remove the sprocket cover.
N
Take out the screw (1).
N
Remove the baffle plate (2).
N
Remove the spark arresting
N
screen (3).
Clean the spark arresting screen. If
N
the screen is damaged or heavily
carbonized, fit a new one.
Refit the spark arresting screen.
N
Fit the baffle plate.
N
MS 192 C

Checking the Spark Plug

If the engine is down on power, difficult
to start or runs poorly at idle speed, first
check the spark plug.
Remove the spark plug – see
N
"Starting / Stopping the Engine".
Clean dirty spark plug.
N
Check electrode gap (A) and
N
readjust if necessary – see
"Specifications".
Rectify the problems which have
N
caused fouling of the spark plug.
Possible causes are:
Too much oil in fuel mix.
Dirty air filter.
Unfavorable running conditions.
Install a new spark plug after about
N
100 operating hours – or sooner if
the electrodes are badly eroded.
Install only suppressed spark plugs
of the type approved by STIHL – see
"Specifications".
To reduce the risk of arcing and fire
If the spark plug comes with a
detachable adapter nut:
Screw the adapter nut (1) onto the
N
thread and tighten it down firmly.
