Chapter 13. Offloading data for support

For support purposes, it might be required to offload files from the DR550 or FSG
nodes.

Collecting log files

The most convenient method for collecting log files is to access any of the DR550
components is from the Management Interface of the IBM Director. If possible,
obtain screen shots that can aid IBM Support. Screen shots must be taken from
customer workstation.
Important log files:
v SSAM Server output of snap command: snap -gc .
v DR550 Storage Controller: Major Event Log (MEL) and all support data from
v DR550 SAN Switch – supportshow or supportsave.
Follow the procedures established by the solution support team in collecting log
files and delivering them to the appropriate support team.

Using IBM Director

IBM Director provides a function to transfer files from either the p52A nodes or the
FSG nodes to the IBM Director server machine. Once on the IBM Director server
machine, the files can be compressed into a single file using zip or tar depending
upon the platform. Additionally, the user can open a remote session to the server
and compress the files using tar –cvf <output file><list of files to be combined>,
then offload the compressed file using file transfer through IBM Director.
To gather and compress SSAM Server files prior to offload:
1. Log in to the DR550 SSAM Server as root. This must be at a local console.
2. Run snap –gbc to generate the snap.tar.Z file in the ibmsupt directory. This
3. Log off and close the session.
To gather and compress FSG files prior to offload:
1. In IBM Director Console, right-click on p52a, scroll down and select Remote
2. Log in with root authority or switch to root (su –root).
3. Change to the /var/local directory.
4. Compress the files using tar –cvf <output file><list of files to be combined>.
5. Log off and close the session.
