"4" Normal positio n. All 4 gears are shifted automa tically and co nsecu tively. Position
"4" affords op timum driving characteristics under almost all operat ing conditions.
"3" Transmission sh ifts up to 3rd gear only. Preferably used on moderate uphill
gradients to avoid alternate up and downshifting betwee n 3rd and 4th gear and on
moderate downhill gradients in order to take advantage of the engine braking
effect up to the maximum permissible eng ine speed in third gear. Refer to marks
on speedometer or tachograph .
"2" Transmission shifts up to 2nd gear only. Preferably used on moderate uphill
gradients to avoid alternate up and downshifting between 2nd and 3rd gear and on
moderate downhill gradients in order to take advantage of the engine braking
effect up to the maximum permissible engine speed in second gear . Refer to
marks on speedometer or tachograph.
"1" Only 1st gear is at your disposal. Advantageous for the operation on steep uphill
gradien ts and as brak e downshifts within the permissible speed range of the 1st
gear on steep down hill gradients.
"R" Reverse gear. Engagement and disengagement of reverse gear only with vehic le
at sta ndstill and engine idling
Importa nt notes
When maneuvering the vehicle 1n limited space, control driving speed by gently releasing
lhe service brake. Apply accelerator only slightly and do not pump the acce lerator peda l.
ror short stops, e.g. at a bus stop or traffic light, leave selec tor lever in the driving position
and control vehicle with the brake. For extended stops with the engine running, shift to
position "P" or "N". On long uphill gradients , particularly in case of heavy loads (operation
wit h trai ler), select lower gear range
