C. General Maintenance and Cleaning

1. Cleaning Firepot using Lever
Frequency: Daily or as needed*
By: Homeowner
*When burning high ash content pellet fuel or a pellet/corn
mix you may need to clean the fi repot several times a day.
a. Be sure the appliance is allowed to cool.
b. Open cast face of appliance
c. Pull fi repot fl oor cleaning lever two times until the ash falls
into the ashpan below. Figure 16.2
d. It may be necessary to use your fi repot clean-out tool to
chip away material that has built up on the sides of the
fi repot and to push out any clinkers. Figure 16.1
e. Larger clinkers may have to be removed from the top of
the fi repot.

If the clinker adheres to the sides of the fi repot, you
will need to manually clean the fi repot. The fi repot fl oor
plate must be fully closed when fi nished.

2. Cleaning Ash Pan
Frequency: Weekly or every 3-5 bags
By: Homeowner
a. Locate the ash pan underneath the fi repot.
b. Slide the ash pan straight out.
c. Empty into a non-combustible container and re-install
ash pan.
d. When replacing ash pan push it back until it catches on
the 2 side latches.
Clinkers fi lling the ash pan will have to be cleaned out more
often than ash.
Ash Disposal:
Ashes should be placed in a steel container with a tight-
fi tting lid. The container of ashes should be moved outdoors
immediately and placed on a non-combustible fl oor or on
the ground, well away from combustible materials, pending
fi nal disposal.
If the ashes are disposed of by burial in soil or otherwise locally
dispersed, they should be retained in the closed container until
all cinders have thoroughly cooled. Other waste shall not be
placed in this container.
3. Ash Removal from Firebox
Frequency: Weekly or more frequently depending on
ash build-up
By: Homeowner
a. Be sure the appliance is allowed to cool.
b. There must not be any hot ashes in the fi rebox during
cleaning.
c. Frequent cleaning of the ash in the fi rebox with a
vacuum cleaner will help slow down the build-up of ash
in the exhaust blower and vent system.

Keep combustible materials, gasoline and other fl am-
mable vapors and liquids clear of appliance.
• Do NOT

• Do NOT use gasoline, lantern fuel, kerosene, charcoal lighter
fl uid or similar liquids to start or "freshen up" a fi re in this heater.
Keep all such liquids well away from the heater while it
is in use as combustible materials may ignite.
4. Cleaning Heat Exchanger & Drop Tube
Frequency: Monthly or every ton of fuel (50 bags).

NOTE:
Heavy duty vacuum cleaners may be obtained, spe-
cifi cally designed for solid fuel appliance cleaning.
