Get Started The following topics give you all the information you need to set up your phone and Sprint service the first time. Note: Your phone’s battery should have enough charge for the phone to turn on and find a signal, run the setup application, set up voicemail, and make a call. If your phone is not yet activated, see Activate Your Phone for more information. Activate Your Phone Follow the instructions below to activate your phone if it has not already been activated. Depending on your account or how and where you purchased your phone, it may be ready to use or you may need to activate it on your Sprint account. If you purchased your phone at a Sprint Store, it is probably activated and ready to use. If you received your phone in the mail and it is for a new Sprint account or a new line of service, it is designed to activate automatically. When you turn the phone on for the first time, you should see a Hands Free Activation screen, which may be followed by a PRL Update screen and a Firmware Update screen. Follow the onscreen instructions to continue. If you received your phone in the mail and you are activating a new phone for an existing number on your account (you’re swapping phones), you can activate on your computer online or directly on your phone. Set Up Voicemail You should set up your Sprint Voicemail and personal greeting as soon as your phone is activated. Always use a password to protect against unauthorized access. Your phone automatically transfers all unanswered calls to your voicemail, even if your phone is in use or turned off. 1. Touch > . Touch and Hold To open the available options for an item (for example, a contact or link in a Web page), touch and hold the item. Swipe or Slide To swipe or slide means to quickly drag your finger vertically or horizontally across the screen. Drag To drag, press and hold your finger with some pressure before you start to move your finger. While dragging, do not release your finger until you have reached the target position. Flick Flicking the screen is similar to swiping, except that you need to swipe your finger in light, quick strokes. This finger gesture is always in a vertical direction, such as when flicking the contacts or message list. Rotate For most screens, you can automatically change the screen orientation from portrait to landscape by turning the phone sideways. Home Screen Overview Your home screen extends beyond the initial screen. Swipe the screen left or right to display additional screens. Touch and hold other icons and drag them to the folder and release them. Note: To remove an icon from a folder, touch the folder to open it, and then touch and hold the icon and release it after dragging it to the home screen. Rename a Folder 1. Touch to display the home screen. Swipe the screen left or right if necessary. 2. Touch the folder to open it. 3. Touch the folder name area below the icons, and enter a new name. 4. Touch any blank area outside the folder to save the new name and close the folder. Adjust Widget Size 1. Touch to display the home screen. Swipe the screen left or right if necessary. 2. Touch and hold the widget and then release it. An outline appears around the widget. 3. Drag the outline to resize the widget. Note: Not all widgets can be resized. Apply a New Wallpaper 1. Touch and then touch and hold a blank area of the home screen.
Extended Home Screens In addition to the main home screen, your phone has four extended home screens to provide more space for adding icons, widgets, and more. Touch and then drag across the screen to move from the main screen to an extended screen. You cannot add more screens. While on an extended screen, touch to return to the main home screen. Open and Switch Apps All applications on your phone, including those preinstalled and those you downloaded and installed, are grouped together so that you can access from the home screen. You can easily switch among several opened applications. Open Apps 1. If the current screen is not the home screen, touch 2. Touch 3. Switch Between Recent Apps 1. Touch and hold to display a list of names and thumbnails of recently opened apps. If you’ve been using more apps recently than can fit on the screen, you can scroll the list up and down. 2. Touch a thumbnail to open that app. Tip: You can swipe a thumbnail sideways to remove it from the list, or touch to remove all thumbnails. Use the Notification Panel Notifications report the arrival of new messages, calendar events, and alarms, as well as ongoing events, such as when you've configured your phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot. You can open the notification panel to view the details of notifications. Open/Close the Notification Panel To open the notification panel, swipe down from the top of the screen. To close the notification panel, swipe up from the bottom of the screen or touch Respond to or Remove a Notification The notification panel supports expandable notifications that let you perform additional actions right from the notification itself. To respond to a notification, just touch it. Slide down with one finger to expand certain notifications. You can also swipe two fingers vertically or pinch-zoom to expand or collapse certain notifications. To remove a notification, swipe it left or right. To remove all notifications, touch Touch and hold a notification and then touch App info to identify the application that created it. To turn off notifications from that application if needed, uncheck Show notifications in the App info screen. Note: If you turn off notifications for an app, you may miss its important alerts and updates. The notifications of some apps cannot be turned off. To use Google Voice Typing: 1. Flick down the status bar when entering text and touch Choose input method, and then select Google voice typing. – or – Touch to access the voice typing when you are using the Android Keyboard. 2. When you see the microphone image, speak what you want to type. 3. Text that you enter by speaking is underlined. Make Phone Calls There are several convenient ways to place calls from your phone. Call Using the Phone Dialer The most “traditional” way to place a call is by using the phone’s dialer screen. 1. Touch > to display the phone screen. If you do not see the dialer screen, touch at the top of the screen to display it. 2. Touch the number keys on the dialpad to enter the phone number. As you enter digits, Smart Dial searches for contacts that match. If you see the number you want to dial, touch next to the number to place the call immediately without entering the rest of the number. Set Up Visual Voicemail Setting up Visual Voicemail follows many of the same procedures as setting up traditional Sprint voicemail. You should set up your Sprint voicemail and personal greeting as soon as your phone is activated. Your phone automatically transfers all unanswered calls to your voicemail, even if your phone is in use or turned off. Note: To set up your traditional voicemail box, see Set Up Voicemail. 1. Accounts and Messaging With Sprint service and your phone’s messaging capabilities, you have the opportunity to share information through many different channels and accounts, including Gmail (Google), personal and corporate email, text and multimedia messaging, social networking accounts, and Google Talk. Gmail / Google You will need a Google Account to access several phone features such as Gmail, Google Maps, Google Talk, and the Play Store applications. Before you are able to access Google applications, you must enter your account information. These applications sync between your phone and your online Google Account. Create a Google Account If you do not already have a Google Account, you can create one online or using your phone. If you send a calendar event or contact, it is normally added directly to the corresponding application on the receiving device. For example, if you send a calendar event to a compatible phone, the event is shown in that phone’s calendar application. If you send another file type to a Windows computer, it is normally saved in the Bluetooth Exchange folder within your personal document folders. On Windows XP, the path may be: C :\Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\Bluetooth Exchange. On Windows Vista, the path may be: C :\Users\[your username]\Documents. Near Field Communication (NFC) Technology NFC (Near Field Communication) technology is a short-range, wireless technology that lets you quickly and wirelessly exchange information between your phone and other NFC-enabled smartphones, smart accessories, and NFC-enabled access points. You can also use NFC technology to save, view, create, or change smart tags. Depending on the applications that you have added to your phone, you might be able to use your phone as a transit pass or as an access pass, by tapping the back of your phone against an NFC- enabled access point, subject to applicable terms and conditions from the particular vendor. To use NFC technology on your phone, your phone must be within approximately 0.78 in. (2 cm) of the NFC-enabled smartphone, smart accessory, NFC-enabled access point, or smart tag that you want to exchange information with.
