Ready the camera.

Hold the camera securely with both
hands, being careful not to obstruct
the lens, AF-assist illuminator, or
microphone. Rotate the camera as
shown at lower right when taking pic-
tures in "tall" (portrait) orientation.
Shutter speeds slow when lighting is
poor; use of the built-in flash (0 102)

or a tripod is recommended.

Frame the photograph.
Position your subject in the center of
the frame. At default settings, the
camera will automatically detect por-
trait subjects and position the focus
point accordingly (0 40).

Focus.
Press the shutter-release
button halfway to focus. If
the subject is poorly lit, the
flash may pop up (0 102)
and the AF-assist illumina-
tor (0 191) may light to
assist the focus operation.
If the camera is able to focus, the selected
focus area will be highlighted in green
and a beep will sound (a beep may not
sound if the subject is moving).
If the camera is unable to focus, the focus
area will be displayed in red.
