PREPARATION OF BATTERIES Use the supplied (or sold separately) AA nickel metal hydride batteries to power the digital camera. You can also use AA Ni-Cd batteries, but they will not last as long as the AA nickel metal hydride rechargeable batteries. However, if you do not have access to these batteries, you may use alkaline batteries and capture images using the viewfinder (see page 54).

When finished (the recharge indicator turns off), unplug the power cord from the power outlet. Remove the batteries from the battery charger. INSTALLING AND REMOVING THE CARDS The images and audio recordings recorded by your digital camera are stored on the data storage card installed in the digital camera. SETTING THE RESOLUTION If the resolution is increased, the image quality will improve, but the remaining number of images that can be taken will decrease. In the video clip shooting mode, if the resolution is decreased, the length of time possible for the video clip will increase, but the size of the playback image will decrease.

USING THE VARIOUS SHOOTING FUNCTIONS Dynamic Range Magnification Photography (Wide Range Shot) For still image shooting, the dynamic range magnification mode, in which two consecutive shots are taken at different exposures, is available. This enhances the photo quality, giving a smooth gradation between light and dark portions, and minimal noise in the dark portions.
Exposure Correction Use the exposure correction function when shooting to make the entire image that you capture darker (under exposed) or lighter (over exposed) as desired. For AE shift sequential shots (see page 59), the exposure correction cannot be used. Press the MODE button to display the Shooting Setting Screen.
USING THE VARIOUS SHOOTING FUNCTIONS Using the Zoom There are two zoom functions (optical zoom and digital zoom). When you first zoom in on the subject, it is magnified with the optical zoom. When the limit of the optical zoom has been reached, zooming in further will then magnify the image using the digital zoom.

SPECIAL MODE SETTINGS Setting Quick Shot (still image shooting only) With the normal settings, when the shutter release button is pressed, the digital camera performs the exposure correction, the white balance settings, the focusing, and other settings before the image is captured. This leads to a time lag between when the shutter release button is pressed and the image is actually captured.
Setting the ISO Sensitivity With the normal settings, the ISO sensitivity is set automatically according to the brightness of the subject. However, in the special mode, you can fix the ISO sensitivity to the equivalent of 100, 200, or 400. Select the ISO sensitivity menu from the Special Mode Setting Screen (see page 82).
SPECIAL MODE SETTINGS Setting the White Balance With the normal settings, this digital camera automatically adjusts the white balance under most lighting conditions. However, if you want to specify the lighting conditions or change the overall tone of the image, the white balance can be manually set. Select the white balance menu from the Special Mode WHITE BALANCE Setting Screen (see page 82).

Flicker reduction setting (video clip shooting only) The flicker reduction setting reduces the flicker that results when filming video clips underneath fluorescent lights and the like where the background lighting pulsates at the frequency of the power supply. The flicker reduction setting is set for a frequency of 50 Hz. The flicker reduction setting is only possible for the video clip shooting mode.

SPECIAL MODE SETTINGS Setting the Optical Zoom (video clip shooting only) If the optical zoom is operated during video clip photography, the noise from the zoom movement may be picked up by the microphone. In this case, change the camera setting so that the optical zoom does not move.
PERFORMING AN AUDIO RECORDING Like a normal tape recorder, your digital camera can record sounds. Since the recording is digital, rewinding to the beginning of the recording is quick and easy. When you add a voice memo to a still image, only 4 seconds of recording time is allowed, but with the audio recording function, you can record sound until the available memory of the card installed expires.
