    Disposing of the computer and the computer's batteries The computer's battery pack is not user-accessible.     General Precautions TOSHIBA computers are designed to optimize safety, minimize strain, and withstand the rigors of portability. However, certain precautions should be observed to further reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the computer.
  • Page 14 Provide adequate ventilation Always make sure that your computer and AC adaptor have adequate ventilation and are protected from overheating when the power is turned on or when an AC adaptor is connected to a power outlet (even if your computer is in Sleep Mode).

    Heat injury Avoid prolonged physical contact with the computer. If the computer is used for long periods, its surface can become very warm. While the temperature will not feel hot to the touch, if you maintain physical contact with the computer for a long time, for example if you rest the computer on your lap or if you keep your hands on the palm rest, your skin might suffer a low-heat injury.

    Turn off (shut down) the computer. Disconnect the AC adaptor and all peripherals before moving the computer. Close the display panel. Do not pick up the computer by its display panel. Before carrying your computer, shut it down, disconnect the AC adaptor and allow it to cool down.

    This chapter provides an equipment checklist, and basic information to start using your computer. If you use an operating system that was not pre-installed by TOSHIBA, some of the features described in this manual might not function properly. Equipment checklist Carefully unpack your computer, taking care to save the box and packaging materials for future use.

    Right-click Click the right Touch Pad control button once. Right-click the mouse once. Press and hold on the touch screen (only for touch screen models). Double-click Tap the Touch Pad or click the left Touch Pad control button twice. Left-click the mouse twice. Tap the touch screen twice (only for touch screen models).

    Always use the TOSHIBA AC adaptor that was included with your computer, or use AC adaptors specified by TOSHIBA to avoid any risk of fire or other damage to the computer. Use of an incompatible AC adaptor could cause fire or damage to the computer possibly resulting in serious injury.

    Do not put your fingers in the gap between the LCD panel and battery pack when closing your LCD, otherwise your fingers might get hurt. Be careful not to open the display panel too far as this could put stress on the display panel’s hinges and cause damage.

    Figure 2-5 Turning on the power 1. Power button Product appearance depends on the model you purchased. Initial setup The Windows Startup Screen is the first screen displayed when you turn on the power. To install the operating system properly, follow the on-screen instructions on each screen.
  • Page 25 Power Options icon The Start screen provides you a convenient way to enter the Shut Down/ Sleep/Hibernation Mode. You can click the power icon ( ) on the upper right of the Start screen and then select the mode you want. Charms Use the Windows charms to start apps, find documents, set up system components, and perform most other computing tasks.

    Sign-in options Windows offers a number of sign-in options including Password ( PIN ( ) and Picture password ( ) authentication to prevent from unauthorized access. If you have multiple sign-in methods set for a user account, you can select an option on the Windows login screen by clicking sign-in options.

    Note that keyboard keys can only be used if the Wake-up on Keyboard option is enabled within the TOSHIBA System Settings. If the computer enters Sleep Mode while a network application is active, the application might not be restored when the computer is next turned on and the system returns from Sleep Mode.

    Benefits of Sleep Mode The Sleep Mode feature provides the following benefits: Restores the previous working environment more rapidly than the Hibernation Mode feature. Saves power by shutting down the system when the computer receives no input or hardware access for the time period set by the System Sleep Mode feature.

    To prevent data loss, do not install or remove a memory module while the computer is in Hibernation Mode (only for models equipped with the memory module cover). To prevent data loss, do not switch to Hibernation Mode while transferring data to external media, such as USB devices, memory media, or other external memory devices.
  • Page 30 Data save in Hibernation Mode When you turn off the power in Hibernation Mode, the computer takes a moment to save the current data in memory to the Hard Disk Drive. After you turn off the computer, and the content of memory has been saved to the Hard Disk Drive, turn off the power to any peripheral devices.

    Memory media slot This slot lets you insert an SD™/SDHC™/ SDXC™ memory card, miniSD™/microSD™ Card and MultiMediaCard™. Refer to the Memory media section for more information. Keep foreign metal objects, such as screws, staples, and paper clips, out of the Memory media slot. Foreign metal objects can create a short circuit, which can cause damage and fire, possibly resulting in serious injury.

    Battery pack This computer includes a battery pack inside. However, do not attempt to dismount or replace it by yourself. Contact an authorized TOSHIBA service provider, if necessary. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack provides power to the computer when the AC adaptor is not connected.

    Power indicator Check the Power indicator to determine the power status of the computer. The following indicator conditions should be noted: White Indicates that power is being supplied to the computer and the computer is turned on. Flashing white Indicates that the computer is in Sleep Mode and that there is sufficient power available (AC adaptor or battery) to maintain this condition.

    Chapter 4 Operating Basics This chapter describes the basic operations of your computer, and highlights the precautions that must be taken when using it. Using the Touch Screen Some models are equipped with a touch screen. You can use your finger to manipulate icons, buttons, menu items, the on- screen keyboard, and other items on the touch screen.

    Generating ASCII characters Not all ASCII characters can be generated using normal keyboard operation, but you can generate these characters using their specific ASCII codes. Hold down the ALT key. Using the numeric keypad, type the ASCII code of the character you require.

    Turn off the computer's power. Disconnect the AC adaptor and turn on the computer's power. If it does not turn on then go to Step 4. Operate the computer on battery power for five minutes. If you find that the battery pack has at least five minutes of operating time, continue operating until the battery pack is fully discharged.

    If you are using Fast Ethernet LAN (100 megabits per second, 100BASE- TX), be sure to connect with a CAT5 cable or higher. You cannot use a CAT3 cable. If you are using Ethernet LAN (10 megabits per second, 10BASE-T), you can connect with a CAT3 or higher cable.

    Hold down the F2 key and then release this key one second after the computer is power on. The TOSHIBA Setup Utility will load. Connecting an external display Your computer comes with a built-in display, but you can also connect other external displays via available ports on the computer.

When you connect a television or external monitor to the HDMI port, the display output device is set to HDMI.
