Oiling the chain
You must do this whenever you use a new chain (5) for the
first time. Take the new chain (5) and soak it in chain oil for at
least an hour before using it. Use BLACK+DECKER chain oil.
We recommend that you use only BLACK+DECKER oil during
the lifetime of your chainsaw because mixtures of different oils
could lead to the oil becoming degraded, which can drastically
shorten the lifetime of the saw chain and create additional
risks.
Never use waste oil, thick oil or very thin sewing machine oil.
These may damage your chainsaw.
Fitting the guide bar and chain. (fig. A - E)
Place the chainsaw onto a stable surface.

Set the front guard/chain brake assembly (3) to the
u
forward position (fig. A).
Rotate the chain adjust locking knob (7) counterclockwise
u
to remove the chain cover assembly (6) (fig. B).
Place the chain (5) over the guide bar (4) making sure that
u
the saw chain cutters on the upper part of the guide bar
(4) face towards the front (fig. C).
Guide the chain (5) around the guide bar (4) and pull it to
u
create a loop to one side at the rear end of the guide bar
(4).
Guide the chain (5) around the drive sprocket (14), line up
u
the slot in the guide bar and the centre hole of the chain
tensioning wheel (16) with the bolt (15) (fig. D).
Note: rotate chain tensioning wheel as necessary to line
centre hole with bolt (15).
Warning! Make sure that the front guard/chain brake assem-
bly (3) is in the set (forward) position before refitting (fig. A).
Place the chain cover assembly (6) onto the chainsaw.

Make sure that the tab (17) on the chain cover assembly
u
locates correctly into the slot (18) on the main housing (fig.
E).
Rotate the chain adjust locking knob (7) clockwise until
u
snug.
Check the tension - see 'Checking the chain tension'
u
below.
If chain tension is loose - see 'Increasing the chain tension'
u
below.
Checking the chain tension (insert fig. F)
Before use and after every 10 minutes of use, you must check
the chain tension.
Disconnect the tool from the mains supply
u
Lightly pull on the chain (5) as shown (inset fig. F). The
u
tension is correct when the chain (5) snaps back after be-
ing pulled 3 mm away from the guide bar (4). There should
be no "sag" between the guide bar (4) and the chain (5)
on the underside (fig G).

Increasing the chain tension (fig.B)
Loosen the chain adjust locking knob (7) counterclockwise
u
one half turn.
Turn the chain tension adjustment wheel (8) clockwise
u
until slight resistance is felt.
Check tension - see 'Checking the chain tension'.
u
If satisfactory, re-tighten locking knob (7), or if
u
more tension is required, turn adjustment wheel (8). Then
re-tighten locking Knob (7).
Note: Do not over-tension the chain as this will lead to
excessive wear and will reduce the life of the guide bar and
the chain.
Note: When the chain is new, check the tension frequently
(after disconnecting from the mains) during the first 2 hours of
use because a new chain stretches slightly.

Warning! Let the tool work at its own pace. Do not overload.
Filling the oil reservoir (fig. H)
Remove the oil cap (12) and fill the reservoir with the

recommended chain oil. You can see the oil level in the oil
level indicator (13). Refit the oil cap (12).
Periodically switch off and check the oil level indicator
u
(13); if it is less than a quarter full, disconnect your chain-
saw from the mains supply and refill with the correct oil.
This chainsaw is equipped with an automatic oiling system
that keeps the saw chain and guide bar constantly lubricated.
We recommend that you use only BLACK+DECKER oil during
the lifetime of your chainsaw because mixtures of different oils
could lead to the oil becoming degraded, which can drastically
shorten the lifetime of the saw chain and create additional
risks.
Never use waste oil, thick oil or very thin sewing machine
oil. These may damage your chainsaw .Only use the correct
grade of oil (cat. no. A6023-QZ).
The chain saw will automatically feed oil to the chain dur-
u
ing use.
How to set the chain brake (fig. A)
Make sure that the tool is disconnected from the mains
u
supply.
Pull the front guard/chain brake assembly (3) back into the
u
"set" (fig. A) position.
The tool is now ready to use.

Switching on
Note: It will not be possible to switch the tool on if the front
guard/chain brake assembly is not in the "set" position.
Grip your chainsaw firmly with both hands. Push the lock-
u
off button (2) and then push the on/off switch (1) to start.
