DESIGN GUIDELINES FOR 6041I INSERT INSTALLATION
INSTALLATION INTO A MASONRY FIREPLACE
When installing into a masonry fi replace, DO NOT
remove any bricks or masonry, with the following
exception: masonry or steel, including the damper
plate, may be removed from the smoke shelf and
adjacent damper frame, if necessary, to accommo-
date a chimney liner. Do this only if their removal
will not weaken the structure of the fi replace or
the chimney, and will not reduce protection for
combustibles to less than that required by national
building codes.
Installation must include a chimney liner (4" Pell
Vent "PL" Piping) that extends the full height of the
chimney and meets type HT requirements. The

either at the top or at the damper area with a non-
combustible plate to prevent room air passage to
chimney cavity.
Outside combustion air may be drawn through the
chimney top or through an existing ash cleanout.
INSTALLATION INTO A FACTORY-BUILT
(METAL) FIREPLACE
When installing into a zero clearance fi replace, The
fi rebox must accept the insert without modifi cation
other than removing bolted or screwed together
pieces such as smoke shelf/defl ectors, ash lips,
screen or door tracks, and damper assemblies.
These items must be re-installed if the insert is
removed and not replaced. The removal of any
part must not alter the integrity of the listed fi re-
place in any way.
The factory built fi replace must be listed per UL
127. Installation must include a chimney liner (4"
