  • Page 5 BMW X5 Customer Service Guide If the above steps did not solve any problems with the vehicle, then ensure that the battery is unplugged before continuing with any of the following steps. Remove the red connectors to unplug the battery.
  • Page 6 BMW X5 Customer Service Guide 2. Steering Wheel Troubleshooting: Check Wiring Connection Step 1: Unscrew and remove the nut and bolt on the right side of the steering wheel. Step 2: Remove the steering wheel from the steering column by pulling gently on the wheel.
  • Page 7 BMW X5 Customer Service Guide Step 3: Check that the wires are properly connected from the steering wheel to the vehicle. This connection is for the sound effects on the steering wheel. Unplug the connector and continue the following steps if you need to check the wiring inside the dashboard.
  • Page 8 BMW X5 Customer Service Guide 3. Check Dashboard Connections: Access the circuit board inside the dashboard assembly to check other wiring connections. Step 1: Use a flat head screwdriver to release the locking mechanism on the windshield Step 2: Locate the three latches on the windshield to remove completely.
  • Page 9 BMW X5 Customer Service Guide Step 3: Remove the windshield and dashboard by slowly and gently pulling up and out from the vehicle in the direction of the arrow below. Use both hands when removing the dashboard. Step 4: Check that the two main connectors for all electronic functions are properly connected.

Checking wire connections in dashboard Step 1: Unscrew these two screws to remove the windshield from the dashboard Step 2: Remove all 8 screws from the dashboard to access the inner components. Keep the windshield scerws separate from the dashboard screws.

Power Switch Forward/reverse Switch Step 4: Check that the red and orange wires for the power switch are connected to the two bottom blades. The top blade won’t have a connection.

The blue, pink, and yellow single wires should all be connected. Reverse the above procedures to reassemble the vehicle.   • Page 13 BMW X5 Customer Service Guide 5. Foot Pedal Troubleshooting Step 1: Turn the vehicle on its back to access the foot pedal cover. Use a screwdriver to pry the cover off of the vehicle. Step 2: Turn over the vehicle and pull out the Foot Pedal to access the wires.
  • Page 14 BMW X5 Customer Service Guide Step 3: After checking the foot pedal, snap it back into place by first sliding in the pedal into the chassis on the right side. Then snap it back into place using a screwdriver.
  • Page 15 BMW X5 Customer Service Guide 6. Gearbox Troubleshooting and Repalcement Step 1: Press the BMW logo on the wheel cap to release the right rear wheel. The gearbox can only be accessed from the right rear wheel. Step 2: Press and lift up the wheel with both hands.
  • Page 16 BMW X5 Customer Service Guide Step 3: Unplug the gearbox connector (white wires) underneath the seat. The battery ride wires should already be disconnected to avoid any electrial issues. Step 4: Remove the right front wheel using the same procedure as the right rear wheel.
  • Page 17 BMW X5 Customer Service Guide Step 5: Unplug the headlight connector located underneath the dashboard. Step 6: Clip the cable ties along the wires to release the gearbox harness easily. Be careful not to clip any of the wires.
  • Page 18 BMW X5 Customer Service Guide Step 7: Unscrew the wire clips. There are three wire clips located at the bottom side of the vehicle. Step 8: Separate the white and blue wires from the rest of the harness. These wires belong to the gearbox.
  • Page 19 BMW X5 Customer Service Guide Step 9: Slide the gearbox off of the rear axle. Gently pull the white and blue wires that attach to the gearbox through the vehicle. Step 10: Reverse the above procedures to replace a gearbox with a a new one.
