    Internet. Virtual Server If you have a static IP address, you can set up the BRL-04AR to act as a virtual host for network address translation. Remote users access various services at your site using the static IP address. Then, depending on the requested service (or port number), the BRL-04AR routes the request to the appropriate server (at an internal network IP address).
  • Page 9 User-Definable Application Sensing Tunnel You may define special applications that require multiple connections such as Internet gaming, video conferencing, and Internet telephony. The BRL-04AR will then sense the application type and open a multi-port tunnel for it. DMZ Hosts Support Allows a networked computer to be fully exposed to the Internet.

    Chapter 2 Installtion Before installing the BRL-04AR Broadband Router, verify that you have the items listed under "Package Contents." Also be sure that you have the necessary cabling. Package Contents If any of the items are missing or damaged, contact your local PCI distributor.

    BRL-04AR Hardware Description The BRL-04AR Broadband Router may be connected to the Internet or to a remote site using its RJ-45 WAN port. It may be connected directly to your PC or to a local area network using any of the four 10/100 auto-sensing switch ports.

    BRL-04AR Front Panel Figure 2-1. Front Panel LED Indicators The BRL-04AR includes LED indicators on the front panel that simplify installation and network troubleshooting. Check the power and port indicators as shown in the following table. State Indication Power On (Green) The BRL-04AR Broadband router's power is on.

    Netscape Communicator 4.0 or above, installed on one PC at your site for configuring the BRL-04AR. Connect the System The BRL-04AR can be positioned at any convenient location in your office or home. No special wiring or cooling requirements are needed. You should, however comply with the following guidelines: Keep the BRL-04AR away from any heating devices.

    Use twisted-pair cable to connect any of the LAN ports on the BRL-04AR to an Ethernet adapter on your PC. Otherwise, you may cascade any of the LAN ports on the BRL-04AR to an Ethernet hub or switch, and then connect your PC or other network equipment to the hub or switch.

    IP Address: 192.168.1.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 All PCs connected to the BRL-04AR must be in the same IP subnet as the BRL-04AR. The default IP address of the BRL-04AR is 192.168.1.1 (where x means 2-254) and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. You can set the IP address for client PCs either by automatically obtaining an IP address from the BRL-04AR's DHCP service or by manual configuration.

    For more detailed information about the BRL-04AR Broadband router's advanced features, Preparation In general, using a BRL-04AR Broadband router for Internet access requires at least the xDSL or Cable service. We assume that you've obtained the xDSL/Cable service from your local telephone company, or Internet Service Provider (ISP).

    BRL-04AR 4-1 WAN Setup The BRL-04AR Broadband router comes with a pre-set default IP address, 192.168.1.1. It also features a DHCP server. To configure it over your TCP/IP network, please follow the directions listed below. Note: If you're installing the BRL-04AR Broadband router in a pre-existing IP network, please see the Configuring BRL-04AR Broadband router in Pre- Existing IP Networks section later in this chapter.

    BRL-04AR 4-2 Advanced Configuration Overview Once you have finished the basic setup of the BRL-04AR Broadband router, the BRL-04AR Broadband router should be able to function properly. This chapter details the directions for configuring the BRL-04AR Broadband router's advanced features.

  • Page 33 BRL-04AR 4.2.3 Virtual Server Setup The BRL-04AR Broadband router offers support for hosting servers on your private network that can be accessed from the public Internet. While the addresses on the BRL-04AR Broadband router are not directly accessible by a computer via the Internet, the BRL-04AR Broadband router allows for selective access.

  • Page 35 BRL-04AR 4.2.4 Internet Access Status The BRL-04AR Broadband router has a special function to enable observation of employees' Internet access from the private LAN. This function helps the administrator to observe who accesses the Internet, the WEB or another service.

    BRL-04AR 4-3 LAN Setup The default LAN IP address is 192.168.1.1 and you can modify the value to meet your requirement, and to enable the DHCP server for dynamic client address allocation. 4.3.1 Universal Plug and Play (UPnP function) Your can choose whether to be in Enable this function or Disable.
  • Page 37 4.3.2 DHCP Server Please follow these steps to set up the DHCP Server. (1) S t a t u s :This option allows you to enable or disable the BRL-04AR Broadband router's DHCP feature. When this service is disabled, the following tables and settings will be grayed out and not available for editing.

(2) Enter the MAC Address and IP Address respectively. (3) Click ADD. (4) Done. 4.3.5 Static Routing The device can allow users to define the internal routing table to best integrate this router into the current IP (sub) network.

  • Page 43 BRL-04AR 4.4.3 PING from WAN You can enable or disable the broadband router to reply PING request from WAN. 4.4.4 WAN clone MAC some ISP will check the MAC Address. (1) Enter the MAC address of your original PC. (2) Choose Enable in the Status field.

    BRL-04AR 4-5 Firewall Setup The BRL-04AR Broadband router can block out designated Internet services, such as Web browsing and E-mail, preventing users from accessing the services during specific periods. For example, if a supervisor doesn't want the employees to browse We b pages on the Internet during business hours, he/she can temporarily remove the Web browsing service from the list.

    Chapter 5 Troubleshooting Problem A IP Address Conflicts If you start up your Windows 95/98/Me or Windows NT/2000/XP computer and the following message dialog box appears - indicating an IP address conflict - please follow the directions given below. Solution Windows 95/98/Me (1) Click Start, point to Run, and type winipcfg.

    Appendix A Loading the Default Values Once you have configured the Broadband xDSL/Cable SOHO router, the configuration settings are saved in the Broadband xDSL/Cable SOHO router's internal memory unless you manually reset them by using the web browser or the ISS Config utility.
