SOOTING
BURNER WILL NOT STAY LIT-
GOES OUT AFTER 4-5 SECONDS
VENT GAS ODORS
WHEN THE TAP IS OPENED,
THERE IS NO HOT WATER OR THE
HOT WATER TURNS COLD AND
STAYS COLD.
THE WATER IS NOT HOT
ENOUGH.
THE WATER IS TOO HOT.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Possible Cause(s)
STANDBY button turned off.
No power at outlet.
Error Code being displayed
Set point set too low.
Heater undersized.
Low gas pressure
Incoming water is unusually cold.
Leaking hot water pipes of fi xtures.
Water on the fl oor under heater.
Improperly sealed, hot or cold supply
connections, relief valve, drain valve
or thermostat threads.
Leakage from other appliances or
water lines.
Condensation of fl ue products.
Thermal expansion in closed water
system.
Improperly sealed valve.
High sulfate or mineral content in
water supply.
Bacteria in water supply.
Thermostat set too high.
Condensation dripping on burner.
Improper combustion.
Low Water Flow Rate
Damaged Flame Sensor
(Error code E35)
Lack of air supply.
Improperly installed vent piping.
Downdraft
Poor Combustion
a. There is a problem with a single-
control faucet..
b. The unit display is an error code.
c. Water heater disconnected from
electrical power.
The temperature is set too low.
The temperature set too high.

What to do
Press switch to turn heater on.
Repair service to outlet.
Refer to "FAULT INDICATION AND
ERROR CODES" section and Table
4 or call service agency or dealer.
Adjust Set point higher.
Reduce hot water use.
Contact dealer.
Allow more time for heater to reheat.
Have plumber check and repair
leaks.
See CONDENSATE section.
Check for leaks. See Figure 41.
Inspect other appliances near water
heater.
Refer to CONDENSATE section.
Install thermal expansion tank (Do
not plug T&P valve).
Check relief valve for proper
operation (Do not plug T&P valve).
Drain and fl ush heater thoroughly
then refi ll.
Chlorinate water supply.
Refer to TEMPERATURE
REGULATION section.
Refer to CONDENSATION above.
Refer to Air Requirements.
Clean or change the water fi lter.
Replace Flame Sensor
Shut off water heater immediately
and contact a qualifi ed service
agency to determine cause.
a. Draw water from the "hot" faucet
for 1-2 minutes.
b. Refer to error code list.
c. Check electrical power
connections.
a. Check unit's temperature setting.
b. Check for cross plumbing between
cold and hot water lines.
Check unit's temperature setting.
