Fully closed position
EFI Engines - Turn ignition key to the "START" position. If engine fails to start in ten seconds, return
key to on position, wait 30 seconds and try again.
Carbureted Engines - Turn ignition key to the "ON" position. Turn the key to "START" position and start
the engine. If engine fails to start in ten seconds, wait 30 seconds and try again. After starting, keep
engine speed below 2500 RPM to prevent engine over-speed.
Cold Engine (Carbureted) - Advance the fast idle speed lever or throttle only feature to an approximate
halfway (1/2) setting. Turn ignition key to the "ON" position. Push in on the key and hold in for 6 seconds
to prime the engine before cranking. Turn the key to "START" position and start the engine. If engine
fails to start in ten seconds, wait 30 seconds and try again. If engine begins to stall, re-prime (push key
in). After starting, keep engine sped below 2500 RPM to prevent engine over-speed.
Starting Flooded Engine (Carbureted) - Advance the fast idle speed lever or throttle only feature to the
full maximum position. Without activating primer, crank engine for 10 seconds. Wait 30 seconds and
repeat until engine starts. Immediately start to reduce engine speed after engine starts.

After engine starts, check for a steady stream of water flowing out of the water pump indicator hole.
IMPORTANT: If no water is coming out of the water pump indicator hole, stop engine and check cooling water
intake for obstruction. No obstruction may indicate a water pump failure or blockage in the cooling system. These
conditions will cause the engine to overheat. Have the outboard checked by your dealer. Operating the engine
while overheated may cause serious engine damage.
