Live View - using the LCD screen as a viewfinder
Live View is a new feature that Canon has added to the 40D. It allows the LCD screen to be used as a viewfinder. While this
may sound useful for clinical photography, it does have some limitations.
Live View is primarily as manual focus feature only (more on this in a moment). This means that for clinical use, you would
set the lens magnification for the view you wish to photograph and activate Live View by pressing the SET button. Then,
while viewing the image on the LCD screen, move the camera towards and away from the subject until you see the image
in focus and shoot.
There is a way to use Live View with autofocus, but it is designed for static subjects and is really of no use for clinical
photography. To use Live View in autofocus mode, first make sure the lens is set to AF. Next, activate Live View by pressing
the SET button as explained above. Locate the AF-ON button (upper right corner of the back of the camera - near where
your thumb rests when taking a photo). Hold the camera very steady and press and hold the AF-ON button until the
camera beeps (the LCD screen will turn black during this step). Release the AF-On button while keeping the camera steady.
If the image is in focus, shoot.
Live View is a nice feature when shooting on a tripod (studio,
portrait, astrophotography), but it does not lend itself to
clinical photography very well. It is up to you as to whether it fits
your needs.
Shown at right are the menu screens that allow you to activate
Live View on your camera. If you purchased your camera from
PhotoMed, this setting is already activated.
Recommended 40D menu settings for clinical photography
Shown below are our recommendations for the 40D menus. Use the MULTI CONTROLLER (see page 2) to move "sideways"
across the menu tabs and to navigate up and down through the menus. Use the SET button to choose a menu selection and
press the MENU button to go "backwards" . The Custom Function settings from menu#8 are shown below.
