PhotoMed Quick Start Guide
Setting the lens for a photograph
You can use your camera in the AF (autofocus) mode or MF
(manual focus) mode (A). In MF mode, you can set the lens to
a given magnification for repeatable image sizing by turning
the focusing grip (B). Once you have set the magnification
(C - orange numbers), look through the camera viewfinder
and move towards and away from the subject until you see
sharp focus.
If you decide to use the AF mode, look through the viewfinder
and halfway press the shutter button. The camera will attempt
to focus on your subject. Be aware that areas of low contrast
or shooting in low light may make it difficult for the camera
to lock in the focus.
User Settings - Why your camera is set to C1
Canon has added a new feature to the 40D - CAMERA USER
SETTINGS. There are three user settings available on the MODE
DIAL (C1, C2, & C3). The user settings allow you to combine a
group of camera settings and assign them to one of the three
modes on the camera's mode dial.
We have pre-programmed the C1 mode with the necessary settings for closeups and C2 for portraits. This leaves all of the
other modes open for other photographic uses and it helps to prevent members of your staff from accidentally changing
the dental settings. If someone does change something, you simply turn the mode dial to any other selection, wait for a cou-
ple of seconds and turn it back to C1 (or C2). All of the pre-programmed settings will return.
If you wish to change any of the settings in C1 or C2 permanently, you need to go to MENU 7 (shown above), select CAMERA
USER SETTING, select REGISTER and then choose which of the USER MODES you wish to save the setting to.
When initially setting a custom mode (or if you would like to reset the camera), the camera should be in the Av Mode. Turn
the MODE DIAL to Av, set the settings shown on the previous pages of these instructions. When finished, press the MENU
button, navigate to menu #7 and choose CAMERA USER SETTINGS. Choose REGISTER and then select C1 (or C2 or C3). Press
the MENU button 3 times to back out of the menu. Turn the MODE DIAL to a custom setting and verify your settings.
PICTURE STYLE Menu Option
Canon has added a new image adjustment section to the 40D
menu. The PICTURE STYLES menu option allows you to adjust
the image Sharpness, Contrast, Color Saturation and Color
Tone. The 40D includes six preset styles (that may be adjusted)
and three user defined styles. Pages 56-62 in the Canon 40D
instruction manual outline all of your options and how they
affect your images.
Formatting (completely erasing) a memory card
The best way to completely erase a memory card is to FORMAT
it. Press the MENU button. Go to menu #5. Scroll down to
FORMAT. Press the SET button. You now have the option to
Format or Cancel. Choose and press the SET button.
PLEASE BE AWARE: Formatting deletes everything on a
memory card. Be sure that you have copied the images that
you want to your computer before formatting.
