Follow the hourly or calendar intervals, whichever occur first.
More frequent service is required when operating in adverse
conditions.
To prevent accidental starting, remove spark plug
Ê
wire
and ground it before servicing, and
disconnect battery at negative terminal, if
equipped.
Oil service (see fig.
)
Check oil level regularly.
Be sure correct oil level is maintained. Check every 5 hours or
daily, before starting engine. See oil filling procedure under Oil
Recommendations.
Preferably drian oil from top of engine as illustrated. Oil can be
drained form bottom if necessary.
Change oil.
Change oil after first 5 hours of operation. Change oil while
engine is warm. Refill with new oil of recommended SAE

viscosity grade. (see fig.
)
Before tipping engine or equipment to drain oil,
drain fuel from tank by running engine until fuel
tank is empty.
If draining oil from top of engine, keep air cleaner
Oil can be drained with spark plug side up, if necessary.

, oil can be drained from engine bottom.
Change oil filter, if equipped
Replace oil filter after every 100 hours of operation. Drain
engine oil and replace with fresh oil. Before installing new filter,
lightly oil filter gasket with fresh, clean oil. Screw filter on by
hand until gasket contacts oil filter adapter. Tighten 1/2 to 3/4
turn more. Start and run engine at idle to check for leaks. Stop
engine. Re check oil level. Add oil if required.
Air cleaner service (see fig.
)
Replace if very dirty or damaged. (see fig.
Wash pre cleaner in liquid detergent and water. Allow to dry
thoroughly before using. Do not oil pre cleaner.
Clean cartridge by tapping gently on a flat surface. Do not use
petroleum solvents, e.g., kerosene, which will cause cartridge
to deteriorate. Do not use pressurized air, which can damage
cartridge. Do not oil cartridge.

3. After servicing pre cleaner and cartridge, assemble
pre cleaner on cartridge.
4. Install cartridge/pre cleaner assembly in base

to base.

with arrows in direction shown (pre cleaner lip
will be at bottom of pleats).
3. Install pre cleaner and cartridge assembly in cover.

4. Insert tabs on cover into slots
5. Tilt cover up and tighten screw securely to base.

Spark plug service (see fig.
Spark plug gap
Replace spark plug every 100 hours or every season,
whichever occurs first. Spark plug wrench is available from any
Authorized Briggs & Stratton Service Dealer.
Note: In some areas, local law requires using a resistor spark
plug to suppress ignition signals. If this engine was originally
equipped with resistor spark plug, use same type of spark plug
for replacement.

Note: Grass or chaff may clog engine's air cooling system,
especially after prolonged operation cutting tall, dry grass.
Internal cooling fins and surfaces may require cleaning to
prevent overheating and engine damage. To obtain service,
contact an Authorized Briggs & Stratton Service Dealer.
Check valve clearance (intake and exhaust are .10 .20 mm).

Storage
Engines stored over 30 days need to be protected or drained of
fuel to prevent gum from forming in fuel system or on essential
carburetor parts.
For engine protection, we recommend use of Briggs & Stratton
Gasoline Additive

Stratton Service Dealer. Mix Additive with fuel in fuel tank or
storage container. Run engine for a short time to circulate
Additive through carburetor. Engine and fuel can be stored up to
24 months.
Note: If Additive is not used or if engine is operating on gasoline
containing alcohol, e.g. gasohol, remove all fuel from tank and
run engine until it stops from lack of fuel.
1. While engine is still warm, drain oil from crankcase.
Refill with fresh oil of recommended SAE viscosity grade.

2. Remove spark plug and pour about 15 ml (1/2 oz) of
engine oil into cylinder. Replace spark plug and crank

furnace or water heater which uses a pilot light or any
