BASIC SEWING TECHNIQUES
SEAM
A seam is formed when two pieces of fabric
are stitched together with a seam allowance
that usually will be pressed open. In most
cases edges of the seam allowance are nished
with an overcast stitch before sewing the
seam.
ZIGZAG
The ZigZag stitch is most often used for
decorative work and machine applique.
The top thread may appear on the bottom
depending on the thread, fabric, type of stitch
Under side
and sewing speed, but the bobbin thread must
never appear on top of the fabric.
Top side
THREE-STEP ZIGZAG
This is a strong stitch, as it makes three short
stitches where the normal zig-zag makes only
one. For this reason, it is highly recommended
for overcasting all types of fabrics. It is also
ideal for mending tears, applying patches and
inserting elastic.
