Hello good people @ Tascam
I have a portastudio 488 and it seems to be completely functional except for one big problem …. the play and play/record won’t work.
When you press either function the head engages the tape for one second then switches off every time.
That’s the only problem that I have at this time . And your advice and prognosis are very much appreciated
Thanks Michael bartholomew .

The Tascam 488 Portastudio uses microprocessor-operated transport controls, so if the play or play/record functions are not working, possible causes could include:
1. Faulty Microprocessor Control – A malfunction in the microprocessor controlling the transport mechanisms could prevent proper operation. 2. Tape Format or Speed Issues – If using a tape recorded on a standard stereo cassette recorder, it may not play properly due to differences in track format and tape speed. 3. Mechanical Issues – Worn-out belts, pinch rollers, or other transport components may prevent the tape from moving correctly. 4. Power or Connection Problems – Issues with power supply or internal wiring could disrupt functionality. 5. Servicing Required – If none of the above apply, the unit may need servicing by qualified technicians as per the manual's recommendation.
