Neck to Body

A precise fit is important for the neck-to-body
joint. This joint affects the placement of the strings
and bridge, and these determine the sound qual-
ity of the mandolin. Dry fit and check all the parts
before gluing.
Components and Hardware Needed:
Neck .................................................................. 1
Body .................................................................. 1
Dowels ............................................................... 2
Tailpiece ............................................................ 1
Nut ................................................................... 1
To install the neck:
1.
Test fit the neck by pushing the dowels into
the body of the mandolin and sliding the neck
onto the dowels as shown in Figure 15. DO
NOT glue the joint at this time.

Check for gaps between the body and the
neck.
— If the neck fits tightly, go on to Step 3.
—If there are gaps, remove the neck and
dowels, and hold sandpaper on the surface
of the mandolin body with the grit facing
out (see Figure 16). Rub the neck up and
down on the sandpaper until the neck con-
forms to the body shape.

—If the binding protrudes at the neck mount-
ing area, use a fine metal file to make it
even.

3.
Dry fit the neck, and mark the center of both
ends of the body and the neck.
4.
Place a straightedge across your center
marks as shown in Figure 17.

Step 5.
