The manual states how to adjust the tension, but there is no info on which problem is for which tension in what direction. So I don't know which way to adjust. We are getting massive knotting up of the top thread on the underside of the fabric - to th epoint it jams th emachine and snaps th ethread.

To adjust the tension on a Singer Automatic 306K sewing machine to prevent knotting of the top thread, follow these steps:

1. Check Threading: Ensure the machine is threaded correctly. Improper threading can cause knotting. Re-thread the top thread carefully, following the threading path as outlined in the machine's manual.

2. Inspect the Needle: Ensure the needle is installed correctly, not bent, and appropriate for the fabric and thread you're using.

3. Set the Bobbin Tension: Check the bobbin case tension. The bobbin thread should unwind smoothly with slight resistance. Adjust the small screw on the bobbin case if necessary.

4. Top Thread Tension Adjustment:
- Locate the tension dial on the machine, usually on the front.
- Start with the tension set to the middle range (often marked or numbered).
- Test sew on a scrap piece of fabric to observe the stitch quality.
- If knotting occurs on the top, it indicates the top tension is too low. Gradually increase the tension by turning the dial clockwise.
- If knotting occurs on the bottom, it indicates the top tension is too high. Gradually decrease the tension by turning the dial counterclockwise.

5. Balance Tensions: The goal is to balance the top and bobbin thread tensions so that the stitches meet evenly in the middle of the fabric layers.

6. Clean the Machine: Ensure the tension discs are clean and free from lint or thread debris, as this can affect tension consistency.

After adjustments, test the machine again to ensure smooth stitching without knots. Repeat fine adjustments if needed.
