Troubleshooting

AVR
Symptom
unit does not function
Front-panel display lights, but there's no sound or picture
no sound from any speaker
no sound from center or surround speakers
unit does not respond to remote control commands
Intermittent buzzing in tuner
(AVR 1710/AVR 171 only): Surround-back speaker
settings cannot be accessed, and the test tone does not
play through the surround back speakers
unable to activate remote control programming mode
remote buttons light, but AVr does not respond
unable to establish network connection

Cause
• N o AC power
• I ntermittent input connection
• M ute is on
• V olume control is turned down
• A mplifier is in protection mode due to possible short
circuit
• A mplifier is in protection mode due to internal
problems
• I ncorrect surround mode
• P rogram material is monophonic
• I ncorrect speaker configuration
• P rogram material is stereo
• W eak batteries in remote
• R emote sensor is obscured
• L ocal interference
• M ulti-zone operation has been selected/Assigned AMP
channels have been assigned to zone 2
• S ource Selector button is not held for at least 3
seconds
• R emote is in Zone 2 mode
• A VR network programming requires rebooting
Troubleshooting
Solution
• E nsure that the power cord is plugged into a live AC
power outlet
• C heck if the AC outlet is switch-controlled
• S ecure all input and speaker connections
• P ress Mute button
• T urn up Volume control
• C heck all speaker wires at speaker and AVR
connections for crossed wires
• C ontact your local Harman Kardon service center
• S elect a surround mode other than stereo
• M ono programs contain no surround information
• C heck the speaker configuration in the setup menu
• T he surround decoder may not create center- or
surround-channel information from nonencoded
programs
• C hange batteries in remote
• E nsure that the AVR's front-panel remote sensor is in
the line of sight of the remote
• M ove the AVR or antenna away from computers,
fluorescent lights, motors or other electrical appliances
• U se the Speaker Setup menu to reassign the Assigned
AMp to the surround back left and right channels
• B e sure to hold the Source Selector button for at least
3 seconds
• P ress Zone 2 button (button will not illuminate when
remote is in zone 1 control mode).
• C ycle the AVR into the Off mode, and then turn it on
again
