“The number you have dialled is temporarily not available”. When you reach the auto attendant of a company, you will hear something like “Welcome to snom technology!”. We take messages like these almost for granted.

This is not intended to serve as introduction into VoIP and SIP in general. You find great introductions and numerous links in the Internet (e.g. at http://iptel.org) and in the literature. The snom 4S Proxy/ Registrar manual also gives a brief overview on SIP.

There is another reason to use a dedicated server for the media server: privacy. Remember that voicemails are normally strictly private, and therefore it makes sense to separate them from normal file access. There is nothing better than a physically separated server for this. snom technology AG • 9...

The installation program proposes a location relative to the media server installation directory, but it might be useful to specify a different location for this, e.g. a temporary directory. It is important that the directory exists; the media server will not create this directory. snom technology AG • 13...
Page 14
4 S M S N O M E D I A E R V E R A N U A L Remember that for a good performance of the media server, the media directory should be one the local hard disk. In the next step you can select the installation type.

Otherwise, choose a free port and write the port number down somewhere so you don’t have to search for it. If you don’t fill in any data or cancel the dialog, port 80 will be used. snom technology AG • 15...
Check that the installation has been successful by checking the Services field of Windows. Open the services Window and look for “snom 4S SIP Media Server”. The status should be “Started”. If this is not the case you should invoke the media server by selecting “start”. In this case, we recommend rebooting the system to make sure that the media server is running after the reboot.
Reboot the system and check whether the sip media server was started automatically after the reboot. You can then continue with the installation using the web browser. Stop and restart the media server with snom technology AG • 17...

After pushing the save button, the web client should show the license type and the menus for the license type become available. If the web client shows „not licensed“, please send the list of hostnames and the IP addresses to mailto:support@snom.de. 22 • Setting Up...

4 S M S N O M E D I A E R V E R A N U A L TCP threshold SIP uses both reliable and non-reliable transport layers. The media server supports UDP and TCP transport layers. When the media server needs to send a request, it has to make a decision which transport layer to use.
Codecs Representing Voice Codecs stands for “Coder/Decoder” and has become more or less a symbol for a continuous discussion on how to represent voice the best way. There are numerous codecs available today (some examples snom technology AG • 25...

You can see that voice compression makes sense only to a certain degree, because the packet transport overhead is approximately 24 kBit/s if you are sending 50 IP packets per second.

You should test the configuration of the media server by calling the music on hold account that you created directly. If everything works fine, you can continue this something more complex: The mailbox. snom technology AG • 31...
Mailbox The mailbox account allows callers to leave messages on the media server that can be fetched by their owners later. The mailbox will notify their owners upon reception of new messages. Using the Mailbox Account Using the mailbox from the user point of view is described in a separate document that can be handed out to the users.

4 S M S N O M E D I A E R V E R A N U A L Scheduled conferences typically happen on a periodical basis. The participants are invited per email and that includes a password. The number for these conferences is typically hard to guess and therefore the danger that somebody will accidentally enter the conference is relatively low.
Trace The media server also supports a simple method of tracing the SIP messages that went trough it. Just go to Status/Trace to see the last SIP messages that went trough the media server. snom technology AG • 35...
4 S M S N O M E D I A E R V E R A N U A L Logfile The logfile contains information about important events in the media server. Depoending on the log level you will see more or less messages in this web page.
To see how many messages are stored in your mailbox, go to the Status/Stored Messages web page. There you will see which account has how many messages stores on the hard disk. This may help to find out which accounts need to be taken a look at. snom technology AG • 37...
