Tensioning The Recoil Spring - Husqvarna T540 XP Operator's Manual

• Undo the bolt in the centre of the pulley and remove
the pulley.
• Hold the starter handle and pull the starter cord so
that at least 10mm of the spring guide is visible. Press
the starter handle cover at the same time and slide it
out of the starter handle.

• If the starter cord is broken inside the starter handle,
press down the cover and push it sideways with the
combination spanner.
• Insert and fasten a new starter cord to the pulley. Wind
approx. 3 turns of the starter cord on the starter pulley.
Fit the starter pulley against the return spring so that
the ends of the return spring hook into the starter
pulley. Fit the screw into the centre of the starter
pulley.
• Insert the starter cord through the hole in the starter
housing. Insert the starter cord through the starter
handle and the spring guide.
• Make a simple knot with approximately 10mm of the
free end protruding (1). Turn the protruding part

parallel to the starter cord and press down the knot
into its position in the spring guide (2).
• Pull the starter cord against the starter handle so at
least 10mm of the spring guide is visible. Insert the
starter handle cover.
• Assemble the starter and tighten the screws.

Tensioning the recoil spring

• Hook the starter cord in the notch in the pulley and
turn the starter pulley about 2 turns clockwise.
Note! Check that the pulley can be turned at least a
further 1/2 turn when the starter cord is pulled all the
way out.
Changing a broken recoil spring
• Lift up the starter pulley. See instructions under the
heading Changing a broken or worn starter cord.
Remember that the recoil spring is coiled under
tension in the starter housing.
• Remove the cassette with the recoil spring from the
starter.
